To gear down for the larger wheels.

Yes. The first Car was called C1 (Carlsson One) 1978. I later came with a differential and was then called C1d (Carlsson One Differential) 1978. After that there was the Pro 80 in 1979. The difference between Pro 80 and the Beginner is the rear bearing blocks in plastic, all bearings are plastic and the front chassisplate is made from alloy. There were two models prior to the Pro80 model and one after that were based on the same concept. The names for the first two are uncertain but I read a test made by a magazine in where they called the second model IC . I don't know what IC stands for. The third model was the Pro 80.
