Losi Street Weapon

Post by Brent J »

Hi all,

It has been a while since I have posted up pictures of a build. I decided to dust off my old Street Weapon, 1st gen kit that has had very little use since I bought it when it was released.

Unfortunately I got carried away and forgot to take progress pictures

I've been collecting parts for a few years, on and off as I remember. Still after a few to complete the build and get it on the track. I aim to run it in 13.5 which will be plenty fast enough.

I started with a compete tear down and rebuilt the diffs with new balls, plates, pulleys and ran with a set of Tough Racing belts. I then also purchased a bearing kit for it and replaced all bearings including the plastic bushes in the steering. The MIP aluminium drive shafts finish off the driveline quite well

Some of the other bits I bought was a Tuning Kit off eBay, sway bar kit and some threaded shock bodies. Most of the nice blue trinity bits I had laying around waiting for the right Losi project!

Next steps are to try and find:
  • Trinity blue motor mount (seem to be harder to find these days!)
Titanium steering link (I've lost the old steel one)
    Servo
Figure out gearing for the 13.5
wheel solution since the old street weapon uses an 8mm hex!

Xxxs axles and hexes allows you to use any 12mm tc wheel front and rear. Get your hands on a xx4 slipper shaft and slipper set up amd you will get more options for gearing as you can use as small as a 70t spur.

Great info. Thank you sir.

I think I have an Aluminium xx4 slipper shaft NIP at home.. Never thought of that!

I'll hunt down some xxxs axles and hexes tonight!

What are VTA wheels? I'm assuming they are a 10mm hex? I've only ever played off-road. Never really got into on-road much.

I've got a pair of pre-mounted Volante 32's to measure up to see if I can get the offset right. Don't know how they compare to the standard SW wheel. Will fiddle tonight.

I'll be running 13.5 so I can probably go up a bit in spur size. Do you know what the internal ratio is of the SW?

Yes that is a Losi Heavy Metal. I bought it second hand a few years ago off eBay but unfortunately have not got to it yet. I have a bit of a vintage losi backlog that I am working through. It's a $ spend balance between the vintage re-builds and the TLR cars I race!! The Heavy metal or my JRX-2 will be next!

Looks better now since giving the body a good wash! I think it had a good 15 years of dust on it!

So I've managed to find some more parts on eBay..

I purchased a Lunsford Ti turnbuckle kit which also included a Ti steering rod. I picked up a XXXS hex kit which I hope will sort out my front hex issue with modern wheels. Ordered a Tekin Gen2 13.5 which should work well with the RS speedy. I topped the lot off with a bunch of Ti ball studs to bling it up a bit!! Just need to keep my eyes open for a Trinity blue motor clamp!

I just need to sort out an RX and a servo for it and it is more or less there..I also dug out an aluminium lay shaft / slipper assembly for my xx-4 parts bin.

I'll get some pics up as the parts arrive!

Looking at the electronics layout, I wonder if running it in Shorty (like we run the 22-4 2.0) on the motor side with all electronics down the opposite side (as opposed to saddles) would be better?

shorty on motor side? I'm thinking it'll be unbalanced... that car was really really designed for saddles!

It was my EP DTM second love... I've raced two IWC's bitd, and I still have one NiB one :) What a fantastic car, but such a dog to work on really! But on the track, when set up right, my goodness it would fly!

That is how Im running my electronics. A shorty on motor side and speedo on servo side. With the light weight shorty handling is the same as saddles.

but you have saddle #2 to balance the chassis' other side in the case of saddles...

I'm saying that motor+shorty >> servo + speedo

Then again, the car won't be competitive to start with (plus the SW's chassis is warped as hell from the factory!!! :D) so who cares, really ;)

Small update for my build..

The xxx-s hexes have arrived but I realised that I am missing the yolks for the front MIP axles (I must have stolen them for one of my XX-4 builds

The Lunsford Ti turnbuckle kit arrived as did the 13.5T Tekin Gen-2 motor. I also managed to find a Trinity blue motor mount from a generous member on this site too!!

I've installed a Spektrum 6040 servo and started the installation of the shiny Turnbuckles while I wait for a few more parts!
