CAT gearbox side plates

Post by npdp72 »

Can anyone tell me who made these aftermarket gearbox plates?
And what sort of era?
They are thicker than standard and machined with a groove pattern for heat dissipation.
(If I guessed by the hole pattern I'd say they were for the Procat rather than any earlier.)
Thanks.

I would of thought MMS as it looks like the heatsink on my alloy MMS gearbox but mine not as deep as that.

Hi Peakey,
You could be right, MMS are certainly one of the possible manufacturers.
I thought maybe WASP too, but I can't find any others pictured ehen searching the Internet.

Does anyone know for sure?

Very nice!

Even more curious about mine now!
Could be home made I guess but they look very professionally made.

Looks like the GPM plates... I used to have a set of them ages ago....

I used to have quite a stash of the parts, back a decade or so ago...

Sorry for the tiny pictures....

GPM parts weren't all in gaudy colours.

They would officially be Procat parts as GPM made alloy hop up parts in the early 90s for just about every competition buggy they could.

That's Mitch, the guy I bought my Procat from in Aus I'm still running the blue GPM alloy top deck

Thanks for the link Terry.
It's good to know the origin of these parts.

Nigel..... John.Fillingham from the club had a full 'GPM' ProCat that he got from a friend... he was going to rebuild it, but virtually every ally part had been hacked about or had stripped screw threads, so he gave up on it & handed it back!

I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with the side plates - but generally the GPM parts seemed to be made from a super soft grade of aluminium, for the majority of items it would be better to stick with original kit plastic parts!

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the heads up.
I've always liked composite materials more than Aluminium for chassis parts, shock towers etc for just this reason.
I certainly wasn't going to seek out more aftermarket Aluminium bits but like you say probably ok to use the GPM side plates.

I do remember bending the standard side plates when I raced back in the day!!
(Must have had some pretty big incidents)
