Schumacher Storm Truck (runner)

Post by heavy_gear »

Good day, fellow rc enthousiasts:

I have a project that i would like to share with you, lately i have only been
reading on rc10 talk, and havent had time to really work on models or let you know what
im working on, so its about time i posted something :D

A few months back i noticed a schumacher truck on the dutch equivalent of ebay,
and picked it up for a decent price. its a storm truck (club 10 i think?!)
after a few checks, it was clear it only needed some cleaning,
and a few bits. to make it into a solid runner (i have no shelf queens)

the underside of the chassis plate is severely scratched, i decided to sand it
and throw some matt black paint on it. i will rescratch it anyway
might get it powder coated in the future, here are the bits and pieces:

and if you all screw it together you will get this, note that i didnt use the original shocks or the ones in the first
pic. this set fitted the best. i still have the original shocks.

it will run with a yellow rush brushless combo, also got a lipo and servo ready to mount,
still thinking about battery placement. lenghtwise ?!?! the battery holders that came with it dont look that strong,
i would like a velcro strap of some sort.

i got 2 body's in a deal, they were 4$ each. dont know much about them, they have stamped on them:
ET 97. i will be using 1 of them. they look similar to an original. (sort of)

also got some extra wheels and aerodynamic discs (?) it popped up and since the hex is something ive never
seen before, decided to buy them. do they sell new rims with schumacher type mounting?

Image

i will promise to take some better pics outside in the sun when
its finished. but for now you have to do with these crappy ones.
i will let you guys know when there is an update,
i hope you enjoyed this quick report.
any feedback or help is appreciated :D

As far as I know, truck rims with castle drives are no longer available new.

I designed some castle to 12mm wheel adaptors which may be of use, allowing use of more modern rims.

I love the look of the black chassis pan.... reminds me of the Nitro 21XS, except for the fact that that one is made out of steel! Pictures here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=50458&sid=154

The wheels may not be available new any more, but there are options.... I know a guy who has heaps of used ones  . The other option that I have to try is some later chrome wheels with the larger Big 6 drive shafts, and flanged bearings.... but I haven't got there yet.

Great project!

hey,

first of all sorry for digging up such an old thread, but i have an update i want to share with you.
i have been working on and off on this project for a while, and i now have a driving chassis!!

its not completely finished, still needs some finetuning and cable management. i LOVE neat cable"s

the slip diff on this car is driving me crazy!
it doesnt have a slipper clutch/spur gear setup, but a diff that can be tightened and loosened.
i dont have much experience with clutch like things and clutches in general, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.
when i went to drive the thing, it got stuck in some high grass due to slipping of the diff.
i dont want to overtighten and ruin my gears.

enough talking lets show you some pics:

i riveted my battery straps to the chassis to minimize damage to the battery, and the battery sits lower on the chassis.

i have some adjusting to do, see you guys in the next update!

Cool Truck - need to redo my very own old Club10 Storm at some point, too.

Slipping diffs can be a pleague... check out the following threads for some tips on how to prevent it from happening.

https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=43008
https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=42233
https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=41985

the key to a non-slipping diff is, the right fluids at the right place, and proper assembly... but obviously there is only so much maintenance you can avoid without a slipper :?
