Jigsaw puzzle YZ10 - soon to be a 93!

Post by green510 »

Hey guys,

Picked up this yokomo today in a large lot of 90's rc cars.
Seller wouldnt seperate, and of course the only car I really wanted out of the lot is also in the worst condition....

Can anyone tell me what this thing actually is?
Dual(Vin) has given me some hints so far, but some more knowledge is always good.

Main things I know:
1993 chassis
1991 top deck
Early front arms
later rear arms.

Am I better off starting with a better canvas?
I'd like a standard spec runner, doesnt have to be mint..

Some pics!

My goodness...that car took a dive off the ugly tree...

Looks like it has a Lazer/Optima rear wing mount drilled to the tower, and I don't know what the heck those front C-hubs and knuckles are. Pretty creative, though.

I don't know that there is a great way to "start" with the 870C-based chassis (which includes the Works models), since they're hard to find in good condition and so you end up getting as many as you can and then piecing it all together.

It looks to me like both the front and rear bulkheads are magnesium, which is what the 870C had. The Works chassis used heavier, stronger aluminum bulkheads.

The rear universals are quite rusty, but the actual joints themselves don't look too bad. If you can get your hands on some front Works universals and a front arm set, you won't be too far off from a proper Works chassis (with the exception of the bulkheads).

rccars4sal is working on a full '93 Works plate set (all of the plate parts - chassis, towers, etc.) based on the set of parts that I sent him. That will get you even closer. Then you'll need a proper wing mount set (which Pargu apparently makes now...although my experience with them is they take forever to ship parts).

What else do you need...
Front diff (35 tooth)
Front belt (I forget the tooth count)
TCS unit (you don't "need" it, but the '93 Works had it and the previous owner apparently tossed an 870C layshaft/center pulley unit onto this one)

So, despite the appearance, this is salvageable. It'll take some work, though.

front axles are associated rc10.

yeah that looks rough, but you can get a running car quite easily. it depends on how true to form you want it to be. the beauty of the 870c/yz10 is that many parts interchanged.

that front bulkhead could be aluminum. it's rather clean compared to the magnesium rear bulkhead.

It's a great start and will come up a treat, at least you've got some of the 93 steering parts ie the support and te track rod all you need is a couple more bits to finish it. I'm inclined to agree with JW that front bulkhead looks a lot better than the rear so is more likley to be alloy. Plus you'll need a 93 body which comes without the scoop :D

Maybe not as the 93 came with specific turnbuckles which I doubt would of been changed. I think it would of been an 870 that's had an update but if it was me I would go the 93 route rather than the 870.

Thanks guys,

Well a 870c showed up in the mail today, I know it was missing a few bits but in reality the previous owner had no idea what it was actually missing.
He got it from somewhere, started to "restore" and pulled it down.
Needed some coin and it was right place right time for me.

A quick inspection for missing parts outcome:
front driveshaft
battery posts and straps
Spur gear and drive belt assembly (i have a pair of belts though)
wing, but have the wing posts.
front belt tensioner assembly

Good points:
Body and under tray are ok
came with a few sets of wheels, including a set of the ROAR spec ones.
spare shock parts, spare pair of "skinny" wheel squares
Some sort of home made alloy chassis thats setup for road car bodys haha.
1 spare mag hub, the front end has mag bits and the rear has plastic hubs, I dare say a breakage in the past.

New Plan of attack!!!
Use what I can off the jigsaw yz10 to get the new one completed.

what ever is left from the jigsaw i'll make into a runner,
hex conversion, later model AE shocks, anything goes aslong as I can get it running.

More pics as I get onto it.

Re: Jigsaw puzzle YZ10 + plot twist!

Post by green510 »

gday guys,
over the last month ive been collecting parts to get the jigsaw back together.

Some online wanted add's basically got all the parts I need.
Also thank to members here and on the FB pages for dealing with my questions :D

Stuff I have purchased, some already home, others still in the mail.
zd-422 universals -New
New works front arms.
Some GPM alloy bits.
zr300 bulkeads - new pair for spares
A organ doner - a complete yr4 for driveline parts and hardware
works 93 towers, top deck, battery straps w/ lipo trays in G10 from rccarsforsal.
(I like the colour of the g10 material!)

Finished product will be sort of a works93 now, but with plastic bulkheads, some g10 and missing the funky arm hinge pins.
Will be a runner for sure, so wont be a minty restoration.

I took a happy snap of the yr4 before I pulled it down tonite, but came out blurry as hell.
so bugger it, no pics till I start to re-assemble.

Cheers,
Dan.

Gave this guy a scrub.
Servo is glued down and theres still some dry adheivsive left over from where the receiver once lived.
I guess I need to google some methods to get that off.

Also,
heres the YR4.
Used the sellers picture...
Has TCS, its not the hardened type, but its got minimal wear.

playing with diffs.
On the left is the one that was in the jigsaw.
Not sure if its standard issue.
12 balls. bearings fitted in the outdrive and in the centre of the belt pulley.

On the right is the YR4 diff.
I beleive the car is a very early version.
different outdrives, bushings where the bearings are in the other diff and only 6 balls compared to the others 12.

This maybe old news to some, but its all new to me.
Thought i'd document it, so it may help future yoky newbies down the track :D

While Im here,
the YR4 front plastic bulkhead will need a packer as the large touring car bumper usually sits between it, and the chassis.

Acetone should remove glue residue without harming chassis.
