MR ED 's super dogfighter (works '91...) hop-ups

Post by Mr. ED »

Some time ago I started designing front and rear arms for the 91 works (fitting also the 92 works, 93 works and finally the hotdog)
You may have seen some of the previous steps in another tread; about converting a YR-4 into a works.
But to celebrate the re-launch and hopefully final design, I thought it'd be good to set-up my own tread.

This latest design addresses the tight fit and other minor problems found in the first prototype

Once the new prints are ready and tested you'll be able to order these from ORB Racing.

Well I finally got the prototypes. I reamed the hingepin holes and treaded the shockmount points anf inally mount them up on my 'test mule'.

Rear end with fixed wheelbase: middle

Bottomview: symmetrical arms, so if you have spares they'll fit whichever side you manage to break.

Click on the image to see it full size. I tried to capture the slight shortcoming of the 3d printed products in specific areas

mount point for the rear stabilizer included

There's a tad of play ; back and forth where the arms meet with the bulkheads. I will leave that in though as the plastic bulkheads I used to test the first prototype were a tight fit. Now they fit both plastic and alu (or magnesium?) bulkheads. And one could still shim if needed.

Now I have to test them still...

Yes, dyed and printed by orb racing.
They use a similar type printer as shapeways.

The same orb racing that makes the ff210?
Didn't know they had 3d printing services.

Beside that fwd buggy they also designed some parts for vintage cars. So I went to talk to them and they'll make the parts I design and test, available to you guys.

Quick update, long over-due:

The car is a wreck... but the arms are perfectly fine.
A couple months ago I participated in a vintage race. To make the car legal and fair to the other participants I converted it to rear wheel drive only.
The handling was terrible and I was hitting stuff on the sides of the track countless times. One hit on the long straight at high speed took the front suspension out.
The shocktower was still attached to the bulkhead lugs, but those were ripped clean off the bulkhead body.
The arms surviving this: with little more than some of dye scraping off, is a testament to their quality in my book.

Hi MR Ed, those look great! Are they available to purchase anywhere? I checked out Shapeways including under Orb but didn't see anything.

Thank you.
I see the thread in the bst section has expired and is gone.
I'll copy the info here.
It's rather disappointing to hear Orb hasn't put these in their catalog yet. But I'm sure they'll help you when you send a message to [email protected]

Here is what I could recover from oople.
Thanks to ORB Racing you can now get this Mr. ED design
Features:
  • Designed to be a direct fit for the Yokomo Works '91, Works '92, Works '93 and Hot Dog (pictured).
  • Ready-to-mount: dyed in black, with reamed and threaded holes.
  • Using design clues reminiscent to the early Dog Fighter (YZ870C and YZ10) style.
  • Optimized for strength in combination with state-of-the-art 3D printing technology.
  • Suited for use with big volume shocks. (Requires a small spacer between the arm and lower shock ball.)
  • Fixed medium length wheelbase. (No pesky little spacers in the rear arm at the axle carrier.)
  • Extra degree of toe-in at the rear axle carrier.
  • Mr. ED logos accentuate the custom look.
Pricing and order info:
  • 50€ for the full set of 4 arms
  • 27.50€ for 2 spare arms
  • 16€ for 1 spare arm
(Left and right arms are identical. Shipping is typically around 5€ within Europe)

Orders and shipping cost inquiries are made directly with ORB Racing : [email protected]
Your parts will be printed on order: currently there is no stock. So, ask for the expecte time of delivery to avoid unpleasant surprises
