Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft

Post by sheriff »

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but after reading, I realised I had a used set of these gold UJ's (see pic)

Could anyone tell me which Kyosho cars these were fitted to please? Apologies if answer is on one of the other pages.

Cheers

I think the Rocky used those. Maybe they fit other cars too but I remember there was something different in the axle specs so they weren't an exact fit for a lot of other cars.

Going back to page 4 & 5 of this thread, it looks like the W5062 gold universals were mainly for the Turbo Rocky (the stock Rocky had dogbones & axles separately), and the Rocky has thicker wheels than the Optima series...so the axles are ~4mm longer. They'd work on an Optima but would require spacers, probably.

The axle lenght where the two 5*10mm bearing are (see picture below) is just a bit longer in gold universals (for *Rockey) than in black universals (for *Optima*). I had those gold universals installed in my some Optima based car BITD but I also installed some shim washers to take the play away.

Sorry to bump an old post, but I've been thinking of universal/hex options on my rocky. I was wondering if the Kyosho RB5 Hex Hubs were ever tried with the LA245 Universals, instead of machining/drilling the Rocky hexes.

Or if there is another option for universals that's been found, since.

Reason is I want to use modern 2.2in wheels, but the offsets narrow the rocky up, and I'd like to look into using different size hex drives to gain some of that width back

You sure you got the right number on the universals there? W5061 uses press-fit tapered hexes, not a pin.

Whoops! Fixed. Thanks for catching that. Posted this late.

Should also just ask if they make wider than stock hex hubs for the RB cars, like they did for the Yokomo YZ10.

Well, found that Kyosho sells what sounds like wide option hex hubs.

vs?

Anybody concur?

Too bad these don't come in a 62.5. Would be a less costly gamble

If I'm guessing at those widths from the numbers "45" and "52", I'm guessing those are 4.5 and 5.2mm wide. That said, you can find those items all over eBay for a helluva lot cheaper than those Kyosho ones...probably less than $5 a pair.

As for those 3Racing universals, I have those. They'll fit in an Optima's rear carriers but the outer black plastic ring may need to be ground down a tad or it'll rub on the insides of the carriers. More info here:

Thought I might chime in and post some photos that show the difference between rocky/raider shafts vs optima/ultima. a pic is worth a thousand words so here ya go.

optima on the left, raider on the right.

Image

Kyosho also has two different thicknessx tapered hexes as well, they used wider hexes on the tf series of cars

sp-2 on the left and ot-19 on the right

Image

also thought I would also mention that kyosho made two different length wheel shafts for their cvds.

LA257-02 on the left and UM510-02 on the right

hope this helps

Kyosho also made axle shafts for the CVDs with an extra millimeter of length, having 3 score lines instead of 2. KYO-LA258 is the P/N; I need a few of those so if anybody has some, PM me. :)

Wish I could borrow those universals with some kyosho hex hubs, and try them out in my rocky, or somebody would do that with theirs.

Would I be able to convince you to snap a pic of the Rocky outdrive with the hex pressed on, sitting between the LA257-02 and UM510-02 shafts, lined up at the flanges?

That'd really help gauge the lengths.

Thanks!

They also produced extra-thin tapered hexes for the GP Spider Mk. II. Unfortunately I don't know the part number.
