Cut & shut childhood racer - my trashed Scorpion
I bought a heavily modified and very well worn Scorpion and a good load of spares 1988, it was considered an old buggy at the time but it ran and I had fun with it. Eventually I broke a rear trailing arm and had no way of getting a new one so it went into the attic awaiting the development of the internet. A couple of years ago I noticed the trailing arms were available online so I bought a pair. Some time later I finally got around to pulling the car out of my parents attic only to be taken aback by the state of it. However a strip down and clean up revealed that I had not given up on it.
Points of interest in the photo below: Body mount on top of the servo saver and taller Beetle roll bar.
I have a few more skills and tools at my disposal than I did when I was 13 so I'm cracking on. Projects like this do nothing to curb my eBay addiction though.

Note the rudimentary shock riser to allow fitment of later Optima/Ultima shocks. This was made before 1988 when I bought it. The shock clamps on those dampers broke in the 80's and I used rubber bands to tension the spring. The rubber bands have disolved into themselves in the 23 odd years it sat in the attic.
The threaded shaft sticking out o the chassis rail is one of 4 that were used to hold the servos in place thru the tub. This was a good mod though done pre-1988.
One last thing, check out the sheared front centre gearbox mount, again like that when I got it.

'Rotten' rubber bands remain on the old rear shocks. I would consider reusing these if I had the tools to make a custom shock tower like Arcocustom (scale4x4rc) and RC10talks own hcp22 of course.

Here's Scorpion/Beetle after a good cleanup with the resistors in place. Bought some parts from a very nice gentleman named Ronit Singh in California including these original resistor clamps. I really need limit my spending so am going with MSC for now. You can see the holes drilled in the chassis rails to screw the servos down, again pre my ownership. To be honest making the best of what I have and patching things up is were I really get the enjoyment.

Interesting handmade rims which came with my Scorpion back in '88. They have the Goodyear block pattern tyres on them but they appear to have stretched over the years and are now too large for the yellow slot rims. I'll have a go at polishing them soon.

It always cost more or less a fortune to renovate an old RC like this. But I think you will make it for less than 50£

Re: Cut & shut childhood racer - my trashed Scorpion
Thanks for eBay links Lars. I have the remains of an Assault coming and hope to use the shocks from that for my Beetle project. Looks like the tires and front bumper will be useful too. Got another Scorpion I'm cleaning up too, will start another thread.

Re: Cut & shut childhood racer - my trashed Scorpion
Hope so as sadly the OT-30 reproduce I bought for the Beetle/Assault rims are too large. However I have some ally rims at about 1.6" which they fit though they are a little narrow.

Cool all metal frame. Lets see more!
Glad to be back in this hobby so many many years later. To see new things and to recollect on ALL cool vintage models!
