Vintage Aftermarket Shocks for a Mid- What are the Options?

Post by HKS_TRD »

I'm slowly collecting parts to build a mid with as many vintage hop-ups as possible and so far don't have any shocks for it, however I don't really know what aftermarket shocks there were back in the day. The only thing I can think of is Trinity which look nice in blue but was there anything else?
If it gets too hard I might just get a set of Kyosho Golds anodised blue or black but that's my last resort

When the Golds are as good as they were, aftermarket shocks were unnecessary. :D

Honestly, other than Trinity, I don't recall seeing anything that was actually an upgrade to the Kyosho Gold shocks back then. Duratrax would've been a downgrade. You-G would've been either similar to or inferior to the Golds.

I realize you're hoping to stick with vintage, era-correct shocks with your build, but I went through that same decision when I built Barney. I was open to installing 3Racing dampers for the Lazer ZX-5, which require minor mods, but ultimately decided to get Kyosho Golds reanodized purple & green instead...because literally nothing outperforms them.

Find some scratched or scuffed-up Golds and deanodize them/polish them/reanodize them. They're scuffed up anyway, but still are the shocks to beat, for that era.

Brimrod made shocks that would fit the Mid. They were silver and had threaded bodies. It'd be pretty hard to track some down though.
Chris.

I used Kyosho equalizers. They are grey and period correct too.

I came across You-G shocks (the blue ones) on a Fox. I have always thought they looked really good, but they are not the quality of the golds. They are a step-up from plastic shocks, but not by much. I was disappointed in the You-G ones (except for the look).

Parma made blue after market shocks....two kinds....for a Mid you'd want their later version.

I've black anodized a set of golds and really liked the way they looked. Understated and plain but it was a good look

Purple would have been amazing tho! Hahaha

A set of Brimod shocks passed through my hands a while back. They're exceedingly rare and unless you're very lucky to spot them, you'll pay dearly for them.

On my optima, I "upgraded" to the platinums. And I kept telling myself that they were an upgrade (becasue they were more expensive), but the truth is that the golds were pretty much the best ones out there.

The trinitiys are very nice and smooth (smoother than the golds)...so that may be the only shock that can be considered an upgrade. They came in purple, gold and green (3 lengths).

I don't know, Dan...on eBay and here, I've seen a LOT more AE cars sporting Kyosho Golds than Kyoshos sporting AE shocks...just sayin'.
i can remember having countless cars with kyosho gold or duratrax shocks on them.
You sayin' in too. :P

And about the Duratrax gold shocks...if half the people say they leak, and half say they're okay...that's a 50% dissatisfied ratio, not exactly a glowing recommendation of DuraLeaks. ;)

At least half of the suck votes are likely coming from people that don't have actual first hand experience using Duratrax shocks and are just parroting what someone else told them. So I'd put the satisfied vs dissatisfied ratio closer to 30/70. ;)

I never had any real leakers, not as built anyway. After a rebuild I have. The orings are a tricky size
I've had many more associated bottom loaders that leaked!
