Still an ultima??

Post by Mr. ED »

I'm just putting up a couple pics of the cars I ran during my radio-silence.
There were more, but these are the only ones which are still presentable.

This is another evolution of the latest ultima in my gallery: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=23385&start=15#p291619

The stealth was starting to give me troubles: bearings got clogged. While cleaning it out I found the motorplate was bent and the gears are getting used.
Rather than buying new parts I went ahead for a 'cheater' layout.
With a lot of dremeling and some academy and other parts I managed to get the motor in the length with a shorty on the opposite side.
For the rear I used the inferno10 gearbox fitted between the earlier installed traxxas mounts and arms.
The new painted losi body was a left-over from my wyvern projects and fits the chassis shape very well, while leaving space for the central spur.

On it's maiden race , I lost the central axle for this car and was not able to locate a usable alterntive.
So it got saddlepacks instead and a low KV outrunner motor with 5mm motoraxle. An outdrive cup on the motor axle, a simple motormount, and stock dogbone later it was running again.
The KV is too low though, and the parts have moved to other projects, leaving an empty chassis under this shell for now.

There was another post from someone linking Imageshack.us images and they were all broken too...maybe it's an issue with the host? Unless both people deleted or edited their albums, which will break all the linked images previously posted...one of the reasons why I don't like sharing linked images from web hosts. If either the host dies or the person changes any album or filenames, all the image links break.

Sorry, my bad.

I tried a little trick to show them full-size rather than the standard small previews.
It works on my pc, but I'll edit the posts so every one can see the pics ;)

Thanks for letting me know.

You lost a central axle? What's that? The car looks like a solid runner. Nice.

The chassis flexed on the ruts and the setscrew that held the U-J on the diffaxle wasn't threadlocked. Went up the wall of death (45°climb of about 4m high)...
when the car came rolling back down.
It was big race and I couldn't look for the part between heats.

IF you're wondering what a central axle does on an ultima: this is the kind of layout I had:

Pretty slick. 8) I've got a Rampage in parts that I've been wanting to convert to electric for the same mid-motor setup. Not to happy though with the high drive ratio of the transmission and the lack of rear toe. :|

The rampage GP-10 is what my rear gearbox came out of. Maybe you can use other arms with build-in toe-in? You can also find hubs with build-in toe-in.
The arm mounts I use are squeezing the box in place: a good thin because the original expanded under load and the drive gear skipped over thte diff ring.

The next rendition with the central mounted outrunner was a lot simpler conversion but had no slipper. Because the moter only had less than 4000 KV it was still slower than a standard moteor with pinion and spur reduction.
I could have gotten another cheap out-runner I guess, but after taking these pics I've started another idea on this chassis. Pics will follow as I progress.

I've considered Pro-XL or Triumph arms to compensate for the rear toe....or making custom blocks and shaving the existing mounting points off the trans case. No place to mount custom blocks on the Rampage chassis though so I was looking for an Ultima's for awhile.

It was always a very low priority build though....even lower now that I've seen it's already been done. ;)

You could make a small plate that sits between the chassis and gearbox alittle wider than the stock cahssis and with 4 extra holes for the mounts. It oul raise the gearbox and out drives by 3mm but thta's ok

How do they work, compared to Golds? I'd like me a set, if they're half-decent. :)

You could try finding Kyosho's multi-link suspension kit for the GP-10, which adds multiple rear toe-in options. You can build your own using a set of Lazer front arms, c-hubs, and front uprights, but you'll have to find a solution for the shock tower and toe-in adjustment plate...
