Working on a Raider...

Post by cashrc »

Hi y'all, my names Cash..just joined about a week ago, and made a few intro posts. This seems like a good home for middle aged guys who like middle aged RC cars. Anyway, I was at a buddies house for his sons 21st birthday party, and in between eating cake and watching the Cowboys lose, he told me to step into the garage, he had something for me..

And gave me this: it's a Kyosho Raider, came with a Magnum Jr on 72 MHz and a Kyosho receiver. The body has not been painted yet, but it has the decals applied. The bottom of the chassis is free of scratches, but it has been run, as I found grass clipping under the mechanical speed control and the rear tires show some wear. I have some bearings on order for it, going to put a mild stock motor in it and possibly add oil shocks, make a fun little brasher. I can get rear tires to fit the original rims, and I've found some later model wheels that fit, but the fronts might be a challenge. This car has 4mm front axles, the front bearings are 4x8. Not sure what size the front wheels are, 1.7 maybe? Anyway, unless it can find some 4x10 or 11 bearings, I might be stuck...might try to change the axles out.
It's a work in progress, not doing much now, I need to rearrange my garage workshop AGAIN, as I build RC planes and I also park my 61 Stude in the same garage. My goal is to keep my building bench, rearrange how I hang my planes, and add a small workbench for RC cars, model engines and the occasional Stude part or honey-do. I will keep y'all posted.

I'm glad to see someone else saving an old Raider. I have 3 of them currently. I've always ran the original front tire's just because there doesn't seem to be a good alternative to them.

I know that Schumacher Cougar 2000 buggies utilise an 840 bearing in their front wheels.... this would enable any 2wd front wheel from a Schumacher buggy to fit, from the Cougar 2000 through the Fireblade series. This would also enable 2.2" front wheels to fit on your Raider.... like I did a few years ago with my Turbo Raider here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=104794

Even easier, the 8mm bearing fits right in a RC10 front wheel so Jc Racing or J concepts for the classic will fit just fine

Nice Raider! Underrated little cars. I was up to five at one point; now I'm back down to just one. They won't win any serious races, but they sure are fun to drive. Tough, too, with a few minor exceptions (rear axles and differential outdrives, mostly), but if you stick with milder motors you should be fine.

As for wheels/tires, there are plenty of options. Rears use a now-industry-standard 12mm hex, so all kinds of things will fit. In the front, any Kyosho 2WD front wheels from the era (Ultima, Outrage, even Pegasus/Icarus) will work fine, as will the aforementioned RC10 wheels. Or, with a set of adapters from HPI Racing, you can adapt the 4x8 bearings to fit in any wheels that use an 11mm bearing (e.g., any Tamiya).

Hi ya'll, thanks for all the help!! I've been away from cars for a while, things HAVE changed. Used to, you could build a complete RC10 from aftermarket parts, and you knew who to go to. The parts scene for these things has changed considerably, and as stated above, I really appreciate the help. I'm a Ford parts "specialist" by trade, and I have a 61 Studebaker Hawk that resides in the garage with my planes and cars, so I'm pretty good at finding parts.. :D

Anyway, I took off thursday and friday of this week, little birthday time, I turn..uhh..Fifty Freaking Four this Sunday. Once I get my garage/workshop back in some semblance of order, I'll post more pics. I know this much, I'm pulling the stock mechanical speed control and servo, and replacing that with an ESC. Bearings, paint, wheels, tires, maybe a motor swap.. :)

So...here's the update. Took off Thursday and Friday, got the garage finished..worked on it from about 830 am till 430 pm. Moved things. Trashed things. Cleaned things...end result, my airplane bench is clean, and I have workstation for RC cars, AND..my Studebaker fits!! :D

So..first order of business was to tear down the Raider. I kept the front suspension as an assembly, pretty well disassembled everything else. I have a full bearing package coming from Amazon, but it's not here YET..(been on order 2 weeks, they're sending another..), but I wanted to install the bearings while I had the car tore down and the time, so I bouight a couple of 4x8s and 5x10s from RCWorks here in Mckinney, and I had enough stashed away to get full bearings in the tranny and outdrives. I deleted the mechanical speed con trol, added a Tamiya TEU104BK speed control from my Stadium Blitzer, (it has a Trinity ESC now), and a Slot Machine I found on Ebay. Painted the body..THEN decided I wantd, no..not wanted...Had to have oil shocks. Trouble is, the Radier uses really short friction shocks. Tried some LaTrax rally u nits, with a little work and different springs they work pretty good up front, but not in back. Needed bigger. Really, the best shock for this would be some old vintage Kyosho Option House shocks..but I'm chea...err, on a budget. So, I ended up using some full size 10th scale Traxxas plastic body shocks. had to move the mounting positions outboard on the arms, and at the uppermost hole on the shock tower, but they work okay. Need a softer spring though.
As far as tires. I took a guess that the Scorpion tires would fit the Raider rims, and they do..I have a new set of re-re tires that just came in today. So, for now, shes done..eventually I'll find some better shocks, and some modern wheels so I can install some asphalt/basher tires, but I like how she came out. BTW, took her for a few runs on the old tires, and she runs pretty good!!
Heres a pic or two..

That cleaned up really nice and I like the lettering added to the tires! Looks great! I need to give mine the same treatment.

Thanks Jeff...I didn't add the lettering, they came that way. Took a guess that the Scorpion tires would fit, and they did. :D Almost done with it, need a softer rear spring, or shorter shocks.

Enjoyed the post!

So those scorpion tires, are they from the 2014 Scorpion? At some point, I am going to need some new tires for my Raider (turbo) too and I like those.

Yes they are. The fronts came lettered an off beige/tyellow/white, but I'm not complaining, they look good and they fit. I think some of the other parts related to the Scorpion, like shocks, or maybe the diff, will work in the Raider. These free cars get expensive!!
Plus, I'm kinda a parts whore too.. :D

One more update..decided my cobbled up and Traxxas shocks just weren't gonna cut it, so i ordered a set for the 2014 Scorpion..and they fit like a glove!! Work nice too, I drove it last night and it's a huge change. Probably goinig to be my last upgrade..well, unless I order a full set of Scorpion wheels.. :D
