Big Brute Fix-4/4 Pics

Post by Winger »

I have discovered that I almost have enough parts to complete another Big Brute that I bought a few years ago. My other Big Brute is in pretty good shape and I think I will keep it on the shelf. This fixer-upper is just sitting around, so I should try to do something with this one. The goal would be to make a driver to play with occasionally. Might take some pics and post them if I can actually get myself going on this project. At first glance it appears the wheels and tires will be the main issue. Most of the other parts I think I have, besides the following:

1. RR (B) Knuckle Arm
2. Steering Servo Mounts; B-6 and B-7
3. Z1 through Z-4; Z Block/Tree (Steering Servo Components)
4. Battery Holder/Chassis Brace; B-9
5. Battery End Holder; E-4
6. Rear Guard Side; E-1
7. Pin Holders; B-5 and B-4 rear lower suspension shaft retainers
8. Wheels & Tires (Two; half way there)
9. Rear Wheel Shafts BB-14
10. Wheel Hubs (2)
11. M3x60 (1) Rear Guard and B4/B5 (will use 4-40 thread stock left over from a RC10 project)
12. M3x28 (2) Motor
13. M8 Washer 8mm i.d. x 17mm o.d.

The Brute was previewed in the Dec 1987 publication of RCCA. It was also featured in the May 1988 publication of RCCA for a "Monster Truck Shootout." I enjoyed reading both!

I think I have all of these parts except for the tires, which seem always to rot and cave in on these for some reason. Actually, I have an entire Big Brute chassis that I'm never going to do anything with. PM me if you are interested and maybe we can work something out.

I am interested and sent you a PM. I did a search on RCGroups -looking for parts- and found out where I got this model...there. :) My memory....where has it gone. :roll: It seems all of this cold weather has me locked-up inside the house and as a result I am taking on this project. I took some pics last night, but they just didn't turn out. Will take some more tonight and try to post them.

I might have a rr knuckle arm but it is sloppy.... i replaced them all 20 plus years ago as they kind of wore out.... some were worse than others. I can check to see how bad it is.

The stock dogbones are total crap and will wear out sooner or later too. I have the originals and the plastic is beyond wore out.... replaced them too.

So true, I remember within a day or two of getting my Big Brute ('88'ish) a knuckle arm stripped out. Dog bones falling out all the time...and I just loved the thing. Striker was pretty bad about this too.

The Big Bear was a beast! It just kept going!

In parts collection phase at the moment.

After looking at available parts for the past couple of days I doubt I will be able to find original tires. Does anyone know if tires are being made now that will mount onto the original rims?

love the old kyosho trucks.. few options for tires 1 think big boss hirider double dare wheel tires will work.. 2 try a 2.2 setup i like tamiya wheels (mudblaster 2 wheels) or a traxxas 2.2 front rim. 3 stock big brute wheels and ive seen the old spike big brute tires pop up on ebay . id forget about the stock tires,seems like they all rotted away now..its sad you cant get the stock stuff cause the stock wheels and tires were my fav part of the big brute (and that cool huge bumper). id love a rere of this truck

Thanks for the suggestion on tires. I will look at my Beetle, which appears to be the 2.2 you mentioned and see if something like that will work.

Did some building on it today. That would cover a lot of the parts. My luck is that I need nothing on A, but I may have to spend $30 for these it appears.

Found rims and tires in Deutschland as my luck continues. :lol:

Planning on building it to ensure I have all of the parts, then tearing it down completely and lastly tossing in the ultrasonic cleaner before reassembly.

Just scored a ton of parts for this project off Harry697! I was beginning to wonder if this was going to happen within reason.

I will update with some pics of the donor vehicle as soon as it arrives.

This project has some additional information. When I bought BB-Brutus it came with a DD (Double Dare guys :lol: ) but the DD has nothing more than the chassis really: Gear cases (no gears - $35 per set) suspension arms..just a carcass really. Here is the link to the ad where I got this stuff: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1767354&highlight=big+brute and here is a pic of the DD: http://postimg.org/image/pvwfzcx3f/

I considered the DD as a project and made a three page list of needed parts and quickly threw in the towel after searching for parts. What has happened with the Brutus project is that I am finding more parts for the DD and Hi-Riders that are reasonably attainable. I have lucked out and Sam has a Hi-Rider Corvette, which looks like it even has good tires...so that will no doubt finish off Brutus in large part.* Will need just a few more odds and ends.

My affection for the Big Brute is really the same as most on here. Kid who got the ULTIMATE gift from parent, which in my case, was the BB. Came with the Kyosho Pulsar Pro 2000, a Kyosho white stick pack, a jar of blue paint (the Hobby Shop didn't have yellow) and the Kyosho body trim kit. I think it was 1988, sometime in April. EDIT: Forgot to mention this was $350 dollars. I recall driving it in the back yard and the top of a rear knuckle arm came apart on the second charge. Disappointed, but that stopped me long enough to put the paint on the body. I ended up hopping around after I left home during my college years and left an entire box of RC models at a friends house. It had my Grasshoppers (2), Striker, Big Bears (2) and the BB in it...oh and an Air Boat and a Turbo 05 motor. Man I would love to get that box back! [So Randy, if you are reading this I wold like to stop by and grab my stuff and pay you for storage.] Lost contact with Randy (airplane buddy) and now I am buying my toys back and then some extras that I drooled over in the RCCA and could not afford. Sorry guys, I digress.

Accomplished the following today:

1. Installed the M8 Washers for diff Joints;
2. Picked a motor (MIDNIGHT TRINITY STOCK MOTOR with a 13T the guys that ID this for me here did not give it a good rating*);
3. Corrected steering linkages;
4. Installed "pillow balls";
5. Finished up tie-rod ends for rear kunckles;
6. Measured and installed more missing screws; and
7. Ordered DA10 shaft set, DA1 E Block and BB-22.

I don't know if others suffer from this or not, but I keep getting old models for cheap and then wanting to fix them up. Did this to a Boomerang (a later project :lol: ) Fox, Brute, maybe a Doulbe Dare, and maybe even *Sam's Hi-Rider Corvette. I can get better! :lol: Now I might buy a Falcon here. I can have them all now! [muhahahah laugh] :lol:

A guy in Germany has a nice set of wheels, but he said the tires have cracks. The tires look really good, but I think he put armor all on them for the pic. He didn't respond to me, so I doubt he is willing to ship to the US. Probably would cost too much anyway to ship them here.

Will update the thread when something more happens.

Here is a link to the wheels I mentioned: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kyosho-Big-Brute-Nitro-Trasher-Rader-Reifen-1-10-Monstertruck-Felgen-Boss-Double-/141575377015?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item20f68cd077

Shopping for the following ball bearings:
4 x 8mm 4pcs
5 x 10mm 8pcs
8 x 12mm 2pcs

Hong Kong seller out of one size, so will wait on those.

Spent the entire day running parts through the ultrasonic cleaner. Also bought a B-Block that I need pretty badly. Many of the parts are on the B-block. The more I work on it the nicer I want to make it. Hope the guy gets the bearings back in stock soon.

Here are a few photos I took today.

Trying the brake fluid trick to remove the old paint from the body. I would love to get it cleaned off and paint it yellow. Will check on the small test areas tomorrow and see what happens. http://postimg.org/image/8cp7yix77/

The most disappointing result were the springs and the black screws. There was an improvement, but I was hoping for a better result: http://postimg.org/image/i27jxynir/
