Ok so i finally got my hands a Kyosho Tomahawk to restore.. and yes only to find out that they have announced a rere of it 1 day after i bought it..lol

So it all started tonight, opened the original box to inspect the damage..lol
I knew it was going to be a little rough as the previous owner had fitted a brushless 9T in it which is never going to end well..
-So first thing was the 3S mounted to the rails, didn't thing too much except the rails had been drilled to mount the plate..
-Second was the fact that the rear wheel bearings were extremely loose.. roller pins were missing..lol plastic cages very worn..
-Third was that the gear box seal was missing so as expected the gearbox is full of everything but oil..
-Fourthly, once disassembled the true state of the chassis rails was evident... dont think these are bending back ..

Overall i can't complain, the top radio deck is almost brand new there is 1 spare rear arm and 2 spare front arms, shock are in surprisingly great condition. body was rough but all fittings (lights, exhaust and brackets) intact..

so my plan of attack is as follows... and by all means voice your opinions and ideas..

new chassis rails (scorpion rere)
new tires (scorpion rere)
new bumper (scorpion rere)
new bearings all round
new body and decals

Since you asked for opinions... if restoring an original shelfer, I'd go 100% original I know it's more expensive. But since parts availability is sporadic, the expenses will be spread out over months anyway. You just need to be patient. Set up saved searches. Ask around. Parts will be found. (Right now I know where 3 original items on your list can be found immediately).

It depends on whether you want something that just looks vintage. Or something that IS vintage. In other older and more established vintage toy collecting communities, e.g Star Wars, the long term tendency is for people to value true vintage items much, much more highly than anything which is repro or reissue. They will analyze toys right down to the glue seals on packets, to seek out the true vintage stuff that was sold on shelves in the 80s when the toy was first released and became popular.

Despite all the reissues, the same will happen in vintage R/C in the long term. It's especially something to consider if you think you might ever sell the item.

Aside from all that, there's the personal satisfaction of knowing your shelf queen is truly vintage and not compromised by short cuts. And there's the thrill of the hunt when it comes to finding the original pieces you need, making the build itself a journey that is satisfying each time you get a step closer to completing it.

i'm glad for peoples opinions and i can't not agree

i will be keeping a eye out to see what pops up as original.. would love to keep it that way.. the chassis rails are the things i need most of all.. the rest can be added as i collect them..

have already purchased a new speed controller pcb as mine was stuffed..
new resistors are also on there way..

i will start cleaning this weekend and start trolling evil bay..
