Vintage Optima Gears

Post by HatTrick »

Doing some research of what to get for a Turbo Optima I'm turning into a vintage racer.

What is the difference of the W0111 Special Counter gear & W0110 Special Spur Gear to the standard counter and spur gears?

There are a lot of different Thorp gears available as well. Any comments on those?

I've heard about the quality problems with Robinson 48p gears so I'm staying clear of those.

Thank you very much for that info! :D

The overload clutch you're referring to is the OT-74, right?
I'll check my Turbo Optimas and Salute I have which version of the OT-74 they have. Hoping one of them is the spring one. :)

In one place I read the W0110 was a 48p spur gear. Is this correct?

The Thorp 4672 Underdrive Gear Set (includes 4741 & 4673) for modified motors.
4741 Center gear - 18T steel pinion gear attached to the center of a 44T spur gear. Used with 4742
4673 Counter gear - 28T. Used with 4741

So both the Thorp and Kyosho Option house spur gears used metal center gears. So both would wear on the center shaft then?

Just trying to figure out which combination of gears will be the most reliable for a vintage racer... :?:

tamiyadan wrote: yes it would of been 48 pitch; however '48pitch metric' so you wouldn't want to use a 48p standard pinion with it as it would chew it up.

the thorp versions might of been 32 and 48 pitch standard as thorp would of converted to make there pinions work with the thorp gear set.

thorp would of also made a 32p metric center gear version that allowed any aftermarket spur gear to be used like a spur gear adapter, and be used with the 32p metric kyosho original gear set.

if you are going brushless things are another story...
I noticed there are Option House Hard Pinion Gears that are 48p. Those would be metric right and work with the W-0110 spur gear?
They are both listed as option parts in the Ultima Pro XL manual.

Nah, going brushed to keep it vintage with this one.
Also picked up a Salute with a belt drive kit to go into this one. :)

Thanks for all your replies!

I found that my Turbo/Pro hybrid had the spring-type OT-74 limiter gear and I also scored another one for a pretty decent price last night! :)

Got a lot of useful info and ideas from Lars' thread: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=34693

Is there a good way to modify the OT-74 with the spring to a more proper slipper?

Other than getting hard final pinion and outer pinions I think I'll leave the gears as they are for now.

Regarding the slipper - I´ve got a four digit order# 2016

Release the throttle on landings and no McCloud, going from reverse straight to forward, stuff.
The gear should hold up fine.

And I've got one word for ya Dennis, Vintage!!!

Joking aside, This is a car that I'll be trying to keep as vintage as possible.
Vintage hop-ups would be fine but I'll be trying to keep the 2016 parts to a minimum.

These are the new parts I'm looking at adding to it:
Kyosho-parts:

OT231 Wheel Hub Set 2pcs (Hex) JPY560
OT207 Bumper Set JPY480
OT213S Front Under Guard JPY560

3rd party hop-ups:

KyoSho Optima Side Guard Set Gold $28 Pargu
KyoSho Optima Motor Guard Gold $30 Pargu
KyoSho Optima T-Works 7075-Front Bulkhead Brace $7.50 Dogboneking
Kyosho Optima T-Works 64 Titanium Turnbuckle Set $24.99 Tworksracing
KyoSho Optima 2016 Universal Swing Shaft $24.90 Mayonnaise RC
KyoSho Optima Screw Kit Steel $30.26 Rc-schrauben_de

Yups vintage is the way to go - but if You really want to race it, I´d suggest an ESC where You can adjust the punch - and still remember to ease the throttle on landings.

Don´t know if You´ve read the last of Lars´ thread, where he mentions his custom made slipper.

This car would race in the Classic class where only brushed motors are allowed so no punch.

I did read about his slipper but I believe he used the wavy washer kind of torque limiter.
But maybe when I disassemble the spring type I'll see what kan be done with it.

As mentioned previously I got a spare part Salute chassis last week because it had the Belt Drive Kit I was looking for.

Something about it, maybe the red/brown belt got my spidey sense tingling though...
Image

Began dismantling the chassis to take a look.
First thing I noticed was it didn't have the lexan cover for the pulley gear.

Not quite sure what I've got here. Looks like someone took a belt and some belt drive diffs and just chucked it in there.
Don't recognise the diffs either as I compare the parts with this http://theoptimahouse.blogspot.se/2008/05/belt-drive-kit-for-optima.html.

The belt pulleys on the diffs seem to be made of metal.

Anyone that can identify what I've got here?
