Kyosho outrage (?) wheel question(s).

Post by Squish »

Hello all.

I have bought a second hand old-school car, which I'm fairly confident I've identified as an Outrage -- thus pretty much how I've ended up finding this forum.

All things considered, it's in excellent shape.

There's a pretty old post where someone also asked a similar question - namely what kind of rims to fit on this model in order to use modern tyres/rims. The answer was pretty much to go find all the other threads for Ultimas because they use the same parts.

I've scoured this forum and so far haven't found much in that respect; I'm probably not choosing the right keywords or something.

On that note- does anyone have a reference/guide on naming conventions for various rim types? For instance "standard 12mm hex" is descriptive and gets specific results when searching. I have no idea what to call the type of rolling rims that these 2WD buggies use, and that makes finding suitable parts really tricky.

Anyhow...

The current rims are intact, but the tyres are pretty crusty and perished. I'm not going for a full hard-mode restore here, but would like to make it properly functional and sporting some sik new rimz, or at least decent tyres. Reading this forum, in 2013-2014 actual Outrage/Ultima/etc. tyres were getting pretty rare - I can only assume they're less common now.

Seeing the rears are standard hex, I anticipate relatively few problems there. I have a super hornet that has a wider (5mm?) axle, that works in a similar way, with a bearing on either side of narrower diameter centre ring, with the axle passing through and it's really slick.

There are a couple of great posts where people have restored their outrages*, but they don't show close ups of the rims or axles in particular.

*What a strange sentence to write...

So this is pretty much the plan:

Replace rims (or just tyres if that works out cheaper/better)
Dissassemble and clean
While we're at it, ballrace it all
Replace motor
Look for a new lexan shell, if that's not prohibitively expensive

This is planned to be a runner, not a display piece. I'd be grateful for any assistance :)

I'll just chuck this picture in here, for future reference when someone else comes searching for the same information

I think the easiest route to modern 2.2 tires would be to use the 2.2 wheels for the rereleased scorpion. They should use the same bearing size as the outrage for the front and are 12mm hex on the rear. They are available in white, black, and chrome.

Excellent idea. They look great and you don't have to settle with different front and rear designs.

Argh!

Those are perfect. And I already went and spent a bunch of money on some front rims from a somewhat local hobby store.

No problem: now you have spare wheels for when you buy street tires ;)
