Kyosho Sideways

Post by sandkil »

Either you love it or you hate it.

The Sideways was the first "real" rc car that I purchased in the late 80s. My neighbor had the Outlaw truck and I had this. Over time we got into racing at the local hobby shop and quickly modified our cars to proper racing Ultimas... That was until the store manager got a RC10. The Ultima was quickly sold to finance the new RC10.

This particular Sideways was purchased a couple of years ago and been stored in the cellar waiting on its turn to be refurbished.
Well that time is now, so let's dig into it.

Such an oddity in the "maintstream" rc world. Love it and can't wait to see it rebuilt!

I drooled over this car many times in my Tower Hobbies catalog BITD. I have wanted to build one for a while but parts are not plentiful for any of the old Ultimas, let alone a Sideways. I've got 3 incomplete roll cages, an Ultima 2 for parts, and a bunch of Hot Trick parts, but not enough to get a build going yet. I figure I at least need a proper chassis to get started. Yours look very clean. The scale size and appearance of the wheels and tires are much better on this car than on alot of the conversions. You have my attention. I will be watching this build. Are you doing a restoration, or more of a restomod?

I've always loved sprints. Someday, I'll get one...
Unfortunately, they are usually pretty expensive.

I see that we have a few believers. Good to see you here guys:)

I will be doing a restoration. Tore the car apart last night, getting ready for cleaning (Simple green and hot water) and to see what new parts to source. Shocks will get treated separately.
Stumbled over a nib wing on eBay last night. Been looking now and then over the years and there it was. It must be a sign, right!?

We wellcome Todd to the group

Next will be to clean the plastic parts with simple green and boiling water. Using a toothbrush and pipe cleaners helps a lot during this cleaning process.

put some kinda preservative on the aluminum...maybe like a paste wax or something.....keep it from dulling off again.
