Kyosho Triumph Project - Rocket Powered.....

Post by Diggley »

I hope to have photos up as soon as I figure out how to post them.

I'm new to the site...sorry.

Submitted for your approval:

"Red Rockit" project.

Parts:

.Recycled Associated RC10DS Mustang body. (only 2 additional holes added)

.Mint (no modifications) Kyosho Triumph chassis & shock towers.

.Modified Ultima (front) A-arms front & rear..Fronts are old Andy's arms.

.A&L Ultima ball bearing steering.

.Narrowed chrome HPI 2.0 wheels w/O-ring tires front, standard 2.0 wheels in rear w/Proline Strikers.

.Lowered Duratrax shocks.

.Recycled (fell out of a tree) Estes model rocket, modified for engine mount.

The Triumph trans makes a great Ultima upgrade.
The Triumph can be turned back into a buggy at any time.

Fun project, ..the 'chute deploys after every run.

Created out of parts that were collecting dust in the RC junkyard..

Thanks!

Here's a shot of the engine mount.

It's all PVC pipe & recycled Estes rocket.

The 'chute gets packed into the vertical end of the engine at the back of the shock tower after the body is mounted.

There is about a 1" opening dead center of the back glass for it to come out.

I goofed on the orignal hole count claim... there is actually 4 additional holes in the DS body. 2 at the cowl, (original fronts are hidden by scale hood pin decals) 1 in the back glass, and one at the rear bumper.

It uses standard Estes rocket engines, packing material & parachute shock cord.

There is an aluminum shock cord mount from another surplus salvaged RC part that fits perfectly to the center (original) hole at the rear of the chassis.

When it's ready to run, about 4" of parachute cord is over the top of the trunk just off to the left or right of the engine. (So far I haven't fried any cord yet)

Right now it's set up for "C" engines.

I plan to upgrade to "D" size in the future.

It's a blast!

It doesn't go nearly as fast as I'd like, but it looks great when it does it's thing.

I think the "D"'s will add a few MPH.

We tried "D"'s in a Traxxas Fiero years ago and it took flight after losing control. The resulting crash was spectacular.

This set up is about close to the same weight. It tracks straight as an arrow.

The "C"'s are good practice motors.

It starts geeting a little expensive after a few runs though...

How is the chute deployed? I saw a setup similar to yours run a number of years ago, Unfortunatly, there wasnt really enough room to do so, and the resulting crash was also quite spectacular. I dont think the guy realized how fast the thing was gonna be. It was .....a frickin rocket! 8)

Mr casual, the chute gets deployed via that right angle tube, the rocket engine has a chute charge as the rocket ends the burn. it's intended to pop the nose cone and chute on a rocket for a hopefully safe return to earth. before the run, he stuffs the chute in the tube. he made mention of it in an earlier post.

sweet project too!! we need some night video as said before!
