Is that corrosion or some form of sealant around the transmission? I'm curious because if it were corrosion, would spraying clear acrylic prevent it from happening.. I have a re re bruiser and noticed the cast cases have darkened significantly just sitting there on the shelf.

I don't think clearcoating aluminum is necessary...just apply a coat of automotive wax and it'll stay shiny for years. The aluminum wheels I polished on several of my cars are as shiny now as when they were first polished years ago.

A liberal application of paint thinner will cause that silicone around the transmission to swell and flake off with little more than a scrubbing with a toothbrush
