Got's me a Tamiya Rough Rider "1979"
HI!... Got this Tamiya Rough Rider. Pretty good condition for being 35 years old! Looks to be mostly original. This will eventually get a full restoration. Now I'm not to familiar with the Rough Rider, but I've heard there is a Mark I and Mark II. Does anyone know what Mark, this is? And what are the differences between the two?
102 RC vehicles and counting...

Re: Got's me a Tamiya Rough Rider "1979"
That's a Mark 2 SRB. Easily spotted by thicker section at rear of gearbox, and spring held on damper mount by a pin cast into the upright. On a Mk1 the spring is held in place by a screw. The black universal joints on the driveshafts are the hardened steel Super Champ ones instead of the standard brass ones which got sloppy very quickly.
A lot of the differences are covered here:

I like the "Mexico" sticker. Wonder if that car has some stories to tell?

Carefull of that front bumper too. I had a whitened one like that crack in two when I gently picked it up by the front end once. I think that when they plastic gets brittle after a big historic hit, it can be a lethal combo.

What Terry said is correct about your buggy. The Mexico sticker is included in the the decal set. Those bumpers are fragile and would break if you just looked at them menacingly. Your front body mount has been drilled out to accept that screw. Originally there was pin with a slot milled in it to accept the body clip

Really? I find that strange...what would the reasoning be for Tamiya, I wonder?shodog wrote:The Mexico sticker is included in the the decal set.

Maybe because the Baja 500 is a race in Mexico.Coelacanth wrote:Really? I find that strange...what would the reasoning be for Tamiya, I wonder?shodog wrote:The Mexico sticker is included in the the decal set.

Sounds obvious, I guess. I didn't know that; I figured that would've been in Baja California in USA or something, not in Mexico. You learn something new every day.

Nice car! Sure brings back memories of my first real RC car, a Sand Scorcher. I may need to pick one up...

"Baja California" is in Mexico (located on the Baja peninsula).Coelacanth wrote:...I figured that would've been in Baja California in USA or something, not in Mexico...
Quick Spanish lesson:
The word "baja" in Spanish means "below";
so, what is "below" California? Right. Mexico.

Sarcastic maybe but not a condecending reply, I thought it was common knowledge that the Baja 500 was run in the Baja of Mexico.Coelacanth wrote: Puedo leer y escribir espanol bueno, pero muchas gracias para tu actitud condescendiente.
I can read and write Spanish well, but thank you very much for your condescending attitude.

Jeez.
I didn't mean to be sarcastic nor condescending,
I just thought I would offer some knowledge.
I guess I didn't use enough smily faces...
EDIT: Okay, I guess that last comment was a bit sarcastic, sorry.
-> I really didn't mean to be a smart ass, if that's how I came across.

Super Cool Rough Rider! I bet it will clean up nicely.

Re: Got's me a Tamiya Rough Rider "1979"
The Rough Rider is a model of the early Bel Ray Bullet. Pretty sure it's kind of an amalgam of a couple different Funco Cars/Drivers from the era. TC has a good post
