Dyna Storm Rebirth

Post by jkelm24 »

I pulled the trigger on a Dyna Storm a few weeks back! :D

It's had some light use with only a handful of minor scratches on the chassis, and came with some other goodies that I'll go through later. The body is unpainted and uncut, but has a few light scuffs on the outter shell. The only bummer is that there wasn't a decal sheet to go along with the uncut body so I'll have to try to hunt one down.

I haven't decided if I'll do a full restore back to shelfer status, or if I'll just clean it up. The bank account might be the deciding factor. Dyna Storm parts are made of gold!!!

Did u get it out of Portland? I sold mine way back in the day to a kid in Portland with a clear uncut body and a painted one too. I had only run it a couple times.

This one came from back east. It included:

- Duratrax Intellispeed 16T ESC
- Futaba 2PL radio
- 2 RS540 Sport Tuned motors (one in car, one unused in box)
- Unused Acto motor
- Uncut body

I paid a little more than I would have liked considering the cost of parts for a shelfer rebuild, but I couldn't resist. The Acto will go back in the car, but I suspect the rest might find it's way onto the chopping block at some point.

Its a fun restore, but yeah, spendy, a decal sheet is a pig to track down and yup, costly, i used a TBG shell and NIP decals with mine to save a bit, the TBG shell is spot on too TBH. I ended up fitting a load of Nimrod parts to mine, but eventually got the sprues i needed, then again, i do love the Nimrod carbon parts fitted. Did plan on restoring mine to run, but by the time i got into throwing tons of money into it, i chickened out and its stayed on the shelf since lol, hope they re re it in time!

Why doesn't tamiya refine the dyna storm chassis to compete with the losi and rc10.

Probably because that would mean using aluminum, graphite, or carbon fiber--materials that were never really commonly used in Tamiya's manufacturing, probably because it's cost-prohibitive. It's much easier to make molds for plastic & nylon and the material cost is much less. I think Tamiya realized in the 80's that they couldn't make a serious run at competing in racing offroad cars, and just focused on doing other things better.

This is mostly my educated guess, but I don't think it's far from the truth.

Finally tracked down a complete decal sheet, and it's on the way!

I still need to track down a couple other items to replace existing scratched parts for the shelfer restore (lower chassis deck, bumper, rear motor guard).

But, the decal sheet was my biggest road block because they're so hard to find.

Stoked...! :D :D :D

Picked up a lower chassis deck and disassembled the car to get things going.

While pulling things apart, I discovered that the rear suspension mount screws were seized to the retaining nuts, and one of the wing mount screws was also seized.

I was able to salvage the rear suspension mounts by drilling out the screw heads, but then realized that one of them had a small crack. So now the search for the nearly-impossible-to-find 'D' parts begins. :(
