TA-02T Ford Ranger

Post by SFC K »

Another Craigslist find. I have wanted one of these for a long time now. It really needs a good cleaning and a few minor parts (Body posts). I plan on leaving the body as is. I think it looks pretty cool with the dents and all. It also came with another chassis with the front drivetrain attached minus one dog bone and a bag full of spare parts.

Nice. I've been wanting one also. Someone kinda near me just posted a roller one for $50 on Craig's...might have to raid the piggy bank.

Jeff,

Looks a lot like the one I just got myself, apart from mine being a blue chassis..... need to find replacement front and rear shock towers on mine, both came broken :x

Is this not the same platform used in a few other Tamiya's?

Nice! That looks really cool with the blue parts Alex. Funny, mine had a broken rear tower too. I picked up parts tree B, TAM50478 to replace the rear tower from the bay for 12 bucks. I don't remember seeing any blue one though when I did my search.

Yup, The TA-02 chassis was used a bunch of different body combos, onraod. The trucks use the TA-02"T". You can still get the F150 and the New Desert Fielder which has the blue parts and a new bumper with push bar with racing light buckets.

You can replace the stock towers (which tend to crack at the shock mount points) with Tamiya's optional FRP shock towers for the TA01/02.

I was just looking at those and man are they expensive! I will try my luck with the stock ones for now...Thanks for point those out though. It is good to have options.

I started tearing everything apart today and degreased everything. It was a tedious task but needed to be done.

Found out the motor mount was broken as well. Good thing a new one is on the B tree I ordered. Also the chassis was seriously warped from heat from the battery at some point. The parts chassis will be swapped out for the bad one.

My exact thoughts.... when a vehicle costs $50 or less, who wants to spend more than that on FRP towers!

The two options that I see are to either buy myself replacement blue A and B parts (just under $20 plus post), or to fork out for Yeah Racing aluminium towers... which are just over $20 plus post. Biggest problem with the YR aluminium parts is that, seeing as you're already buying parts, why not also get the alloy motor mount.... and the alloy prop shaft..... and it quickly adds up, especially if you're a cheap bastid like me!

I hear you. I am trying to keep this on the cheap as well. I picked this up for $75 on CL, but I also got a TL-01 and two JRL T-birds, so this one cost me 25... I do want to get the aluminum prop shaft but that will be it for hop-ups, for now. GPM has one for 13 bucks.

I have the Toyota PreRunner version. Its one of my favorites. The aluminum motor mount is a great option, if you can find one.

Being Tamiya, you might be able to find them in old hobby shops (don't pay attention to the inane prices of some Ebay sellers).

There's also aftermarket options. IIRC, GPM made carbon shock towers up to a few years ago, might be easiest to find.

Oh, alloy motor mount is a MUST HAVE for this chassis. The plastic one will melt or break.
