mip diff info/help

Post by moj »

getting the bits together to try to make my own take on the mip ball diff,it wont be a replica as im basing it on a tamiya aftermarket brass gear. ive found a supplier for the belleville washers and am guessing there approx 2-2.5mm id and 5-6mm od but at aprox £5 each plus postage i dont really want to end up ordering several different sizes till i get it right anyone know the sizes or an alternative diff that uses the same size i can get spares for,ive seen hpi sets that give you 4 washers for the price of one from the supplier but they dont give sizes just model names.

I'm trying to find the website I was on recently that had Bellevilles way cheaper than that. Honestly, that's highway robbery. You could probably find a complete rebuild kit with the right size pieces in it for way less.

I think I have a bin with a whole mess of them in one of my parts cabinets. If they were worth $7 each I'd be buying stuff with washers!
I miss brushed motors in that hazy, everything seemed better when I was a kid, kind of way.

no unfortunatly i dont know the sizes but ive found a cheaper uk supplier (6 pence each instead of £3.90) they didnt have bellevilles in stock but they had disc springs which they describe as thin bellevilles approx 1/2 the thickness 0.3mm. these came in a smaller od of 6mm,the smallest bellevilles they had were 7mm od.

gonna try with what ive got but still hoping someone with a mip diff can give me some dimensions if anyones got one to hand

Here's the measurements of a belleville washer from an MIP B400 diff in millimetres and thousandths of an inch.

Inner diameter 2.15mm / .0845"
Outer diameter 4.98mm / .196"
Height .59mm / .0235"
Material thickness .26mm / .010"

Hope this helps.
Chris.

The output shafts are steel on the MIP diff.

wow exactly a year since i started this thread and finally got round to sort of finishing it mainly due to my other project/thread.bit of a theme developing here still not perfect and needs a bit of refining but functioning tho it seems to have loosend itself off.
not sure if i will have to put a kink in the thro bolt like the thorpe diff and resize a couple of bits but fairly happy with it.its a bit of a hybrid of both types.

thanks dan, very informative post, apart from the aftermarket brass gear i fabricated the whole thing myself but im a very amateur machinist so this was the easiest/least parts design for me to attempt.as im just a very occasional basher and not a serious racer im hoping this will hold up okay for me,i can remake pressure plates as and when i need to.
stupid question time ive read about the bent screw but whereabout do you bend it tip, middle or allen bolt end?

I would machine and tap out the opposite side and use a jam screw ie. grub screw. That will lock perfectly and you don't have to damage the through bolt.

To answer your question, typically it's bent where it is threaded into the diff half.
