Delta Villain mod with a twist

Delta Villain probably was the top 1/10 Pro-10 line up under Delta. Hard to come by now.

Bolink always have a pseudo off road car. Heard that it was light and fast, ok to drive on relatively non-bumpy track with no jumps.

I do not know anyone personally has on though...

Back about 1979 Associated RC200 had an twist too, off road wheels and tires on a pan car. Seems like it was only offered in the Japanese market.

A plastic lunch box was actually included as the electronic box! Zero suspension except those off road tires were supposed to be bouncy...

A friend of mine had it and he enjoyed it a lot with his brother until his mom got pissed off when they started the engine in the bedroom. ;)

I got a Villain and then I started something crazy.

Saw the one piece motor mount was rock solid, so I decided to take off some material to lighten it :)

I did not like the excessive camber change in suspension travel in the Villain IFS, so I mod it into something like P4.

Someone said I was crazy to even come close to think about mod the front end as the earlier Eagles were having similar design and it worked ok. Well, the fact is, even the subsequent Delta cars were design with sort of double wishbone suspension, and I took a look at P4, the idea was simple and make sense. Why not?

With tiny suspension travel, excessive camber change is less significant but I was looking for more suspension travel, since it can be easily improved, why not?

Somehow the sequence of the photos were reversed... anyway, you probably got the idea. Luckily nowadays there are plenty of various metal ball joints that I believe it strong enough to do the job.

    More photos.

Front end completed. Rock solid!!! Added 3racing touring car shocks.

Bolink yellow wheels at 2 inch diameter fit perfectly, and good start for off road tires.

The rear axle was nice but the bearing holes were OFF alignment!!! I am not trying to be difficult here but the precision/tolerance in various parts of this car were acceptable by suboptimal, not fair to compare it with contemporary cars as I believe the milling was not done with great machines that we have today.

Put it this way, for example, in a F103 (not very new now), we see the rear axle spins freely. In the case of this rear pod, the axle barely spin even with new bearings... may be this one was one off bad or it is systematic issue, I have no idea...

The tolerances was not so great. See the mount was off square, too much play...

Decide to give up the mid shock as the two rear shocks can be tilted to serve similar function to a certain degree :)

Tires added, proline 2.2 at the rear.

Soft tires also help to play some part in suspension. Using tires of various hardness/thickness/width to fine tune suspension was a common trick back when on road cars were pan cars and they were design with no suspension, a typical example will be RC12E. Another trick was drilled out wheels but that is another story... :)

RC10 worlds front wheels and proline tire from my very original Worlds car was used here. Quite a great match.

I have a bug body lying around, trimmed, mod. A pseudo off road low rider :)
