Re: Team Car Runner build (Machining new TI Turnbuckles)

Post by Seabass »

Well the car is done and my final parts came in. After opening the package I realized I screwed up and did not order enough bearings  . I was soooo looking forward to taking the car for its maiden drive today.

Well the order is in for some more bearings. Looks like it will be mid next week before the car is operational. Final pics will be uploaded when the car is completed.

Re: Team Car Runner build (Machining new spindles)

Post by Seabass »

Since I am waiting for the rest of my parts to get in, I decided to do something a little different. I hated the whay the nuts on the spindles stuck out past the wheel. After some thought and a trip to the local fastener place I started up the lathe.

I machined new spindles out of 6061 aluminum and tapped the inside of the spindle for a 6-32 machine screw. The end result is exactly what I was looking for. A nice clean look that will make the car nutless  .

I am looking at the MIP CVDs I just bought and I am probably going to chuck them up in the machine to do the same thing on the rear. Let's hope I don't screw them up.

I chucked up my MIP CVDs and got the results I was looking for. Went slow just like suggested and they turned out awesome. Since I have the pics posted you can also see the aluminum spacers I made. No need to buy them when I can make them myself. You can also see the delrin spacers I had to make for the hinge pins. I also had to make a couple shims to put between the hub and the arms.

Enjoy the pics.

This car just gets better & better! - I love the look achieved by the internally threaded axles.... my only concern though would possibly be the screws shaking loose :?:

I need 3/16 x 1/2 bearings. I already ordered them through Avid so no need to send any. They should be here any day now.

Guys I have hit the mark I have been working towards for some time now. If you are reading this thread you already know what went into this car. I spent several hours on my lathe making parts for this car and I very happy with the results. I have a brushed motor and a ESC I am going to throw in the car for the time being. I hope to get out to a track very soon to turn some laps with the car. I will be sure to give another update on how the car drives. Anyway here are the final pics. I took these with a makeshift photo booth which worked out ok. The pics are slightly yellowish because of my light source and lack of proper equipment.

I also have to thank Brandon G, M-Vice, and Aconsola. They helped me aquire some of the parts I needed for this build. EA Rouge also helped me in the department of the Kyosho Velvets. His information proved valuable in getting the right parts for the shocks. Thanks to many of the members here as well who bought some of my aluminum parts. You guys helped fund this build :D .

I hope to start on another buggy here in the next few weeks. I already have most of the major parts to begin.

Thanks for all the comments, you guys guys are too kind.

Jake

This looks super cool Jake, you did a great job and I can’t wait to start mine. I remember when we started talking about this car a looooong time ago and I was not expecting it would become this remarkable car.
The nutless look is very cool and unique, Excellent stuff.

It looks like it will perform great, let us know how you like it in the track.

This is one of the best builds I've seen on RC10Talk. I always go back to view this thread when I get the egret to build another car. Awesome job Jake.
