I do not agree with building a WOIN car using such rare, vintage MIP parts, but I'll be watching this thread regardless.

It sounds like the car your subscriber is sending you is the first of the SP-1 transmission based 4x4 kits, not the 4-10 legend kit. There were basically 4 MIP 4x4 kits for the RC10. The first one had a cable drive system. That was followed by the SP-1 chain drive kit (later a belt option was released). The last one was the 4-10. A very generous fellow indeed as those kits still bring some pretty good prices.

I wouldn't build one using modern parts either, but I have to admit that I'm curious to see what it'll look like. :) Good luck with your builds!

Thanks for the info, aeiou. Yes, based on the images, it is a SP-1 kit. He also has the belt option parts that he'll be including.

As for the modern parts thing, somebody has to be the first to do it... ;)

Yeah build them the way you want. I probably wouldn't modify the parts, because guys will pay absurd money for them. You can always rebuild cars and build however your mood suits you.

Just to be clear here, I won't be modifying the 4-10 parts.

From the video it looks to be a legend front gearbox. Can't tell on the tranny as the lighting is dark.

I know I'll be watching your build thread and YouTube videos as well. I'm a subscriber to your channel and a fan of many of your vintage kits/builds.

Thank you, sir. I will do my best not to disappoint. It will take me some time to complete the initial parts haul, and then I can get started. With the exception of one more YZ10 Works resto (which I may or may not make a video of...depends on what I do to it), and maintaining my runners, these 4wd conversions should be at the top of the list.

I have a pretty interesting idea that I'd like to try with the 4-10 conversion...stay tuned. The SP1/2 build will be more conventional, though...just nice and clean.

So I got to tearing this thing down, throwing aside any parts I deemed not worthy for the restoration. That basically means the MIP conversion parts only, and most of those I am putting aside for the SP-2 restoration. Most of the chassis was just a standard RC10 with the snot kicked out of it. I'll clean those up later and restore it into a normal 2wd.

So what this really comes down to, is the front gearbox and the rear output pulley + idler. Picture below. I have to build up a whole new chassis from just that. Wonderful ;) I have a few goodie bags to get started on this. I plan on starting with the front end, which will be a Worlds front end with the taller shock tower. I already ordered longer belts that should be perfect for the job - S3M-633-4 - from polybelt.com. Ironically, these are the exact same belt length as what you get on the SC10 4x4, with the only difference being the width (5mm on the SC10 vs. 4mm here).

The front diff is literally two one-way bearings on either side, mated to the center of the diff gear. One of them is a little wonky, though, occasionally permitting some rotation in the locked direction before actually locking up. Not really an issue for a shelf queen, but definitely irritating. Both the front and rear pulleys mount onto a conical shaft, meaning it's a b*tch to get them back off. Still trying to remove the front pulley without breaking anything. Might need to throw some WD-40 at it?

The rear pulley is a slipper-type pulley, but is missing both slipper pads and and the spring washer. I think I can cut new pads from a set of AE high torque pads, and I'll improvise on the spring washer.

I'm surprised a conversion this derelict went for so much money. I'm positive somebody else would have paid as much if I did not bid on it, since I got it with like 3 seconds to go. So, if that means that is the actual market value for this thing, it had better be worth a hell of a lot more by the time I'm done with it, big bores and all.

Ok, front shock tower taken care of. I started by bolting the MIP tower to the World's tower and tracing out the shape and hole locations. Then, I used a router bit and a sanding bit on my Dremel to remove the traced-out regions (2.5mm drill bit used for the holes). This required quite a bit of trial and error, since the pulley runs up against the World's tower in a way it never did on the MIP tower. So, I had to remove some extra material after test fitting and figuring out where unnecessary contact was being made. It does fit, though...just took a bit of work.
