A blast from the past..

**Hello again! this is an old thread now brought back to life by the OP, please see update posted at the end**

Hello all, from an old codger in Georgia, USA.

I have discovered my old RC10 from the mid '80s that has been stored away for about three decades.

I think I have a gold pan with "A" stamped on the bottom and another "A" stamped on the top.

The bottom of the box says it is a "#6010 complete kit w/out radio or batteries".

It has ball bearings, so I must have upgraded it back then. Still has the original motor with the capacitors on it.

My plan is to get it running again on my driveway and a planned back-yard track. I'll take it apart and clean it up,
then get a modern motor and electronics.

I also have a World's Car re-re kit on the way from Associated, so this old #6010 won't be lonely anymore.

In the meantime I've bought a Traxxas Slash 4x4 to work on my rusty driving skillz.

I am glad to have found this helpful forum, and look forward to joining in on the fun.

The wheels appear to be vintage aluminum. including the wing nuts! Very nice.

Oops, I should have mentioned that in my youthful excitement, I painted them thirty years ago. I guess I did a pretty good job

I'm thinking that since I have the Traxxas rtr for driver's training, I might continue with their power and radios for the RC's.

I'm not ever going to be racing, just having home-spun fun in my driveway and the weedy parts of my yard.

Way back when, I liked having a transmitter for each car, so guests could join in.

Wow! You have an incredible opportunity to restore your old vintage buggy. Of any buggy I could wish to own it would be my original car from 1986.

I started out like you with an A stamp from 1986. I upgraded it a little but then felt bad running it so bought some ebay parts and well...10 cars later, the addiction is in full swing now

Thanks for the encouragement I do want to run it occasionally, so maybe some modern parts will go have to go into it?

Hmm..I do still have that old rheostat…

I also have the Futaba transmitter from back then. It feels like it weighs 5 pounds compared to
the featherweight Traxxas TQ that came with the Slash.

As a first step, I reckon I will wash all the parts with water/dish soap/toothbrush, then give them a peroxide bath in the sun.

I'll post more photos along the way, though it may take a while (the World's Car re-re arrives Tuesday ).

Update:
I have decided to clean up my old "A" stamp for a shelf display of "what it looked like when I was running it in the '80s".
The body and wing are in pretty good shape, the tires are spare originals and unused, and the silver-painted wheels
will probably stay painted. I may leave the front bumper bar off, as it is really beat up.

The Worlds Car re-re kit arrived last month and I've been slowly building it as time permits. It won't be completely original
as I can't resist modifying it, at least a little bit. I have a SC700-BL ESC/Reedy 3300Kv 540R motor and some WolfPack
3600 MAH NiMH ready to install.

I'll post some photos when it gets further along.

I've been doing a lot of reading here and really appreciate all the good info.

Good choice / idea - your car looks pretty clean with low run time, save it.
Looks like it was produced by AE in 1985

Yes, it does have low run time. I never raced it, just ran it in my street/driveway and next door in the dirt while their house was being built.

I am debating how much clean-up vs replacement parts to use. For instance, the ball caps are distressed a bit, so I ask myself: should I replace them?

The gold pan is scraped a little on the bottom so I lean toward keeping all the original parts, but cleaned up of course.

Nice tub there, I would advise to clean everything as much as you can, dismantling it up to the last nut. Soak all the metals parts in WD40 overnight and wife everything. If you don't plan to run it any longer, keep it as original as possible even with some slightly loose ball cups. I would avoid re-re parts (most of them are crap anyway, i.e. rear axles are floating in the bearings, rear hub bearings are floating in the rears hubs, ball cups are almost green, etc.) on it and keep it genuine. With little extra efforts you can probably make it look like new again.

I found two more pairs of rear wheels with barely worn tires in the storeroom, along with the
unused silver shock springs.

These wheels also have the silver paint like the ones above in the photos, which I am liking less and less.
I wonder what would take it off without damage to the nylon? It was probably Testor's plastic model paint.

There are many links around here regarding paint removal.
Majority likes Brake Fluid - soak overnight
Stock wheels should not be harmed by Acetone, quick and powerful (will also remove CA glue).

Probably a good choice to shelf it, though with some work a short arm car can be a fun runner. Getting an old 6 gear with original parts to run well is a lot of work. De-burring the top drives and outdrives is basically mandatory. Did you do that in the 80s?
The alternative is getting all re-re transmission internals, which is expensive. (Obviously none of this matters to you, for a shelfer.)

Hello again, I’m back!

Since I was here last, the wife and I have sold a home, downsized, and moved to a retirement community.

I sold the Worlds Car Re-re while we were packing up, but kept my old RC10, which is now 3-1/2 years older

I plan to get it back together soon and will post some photos. It may be a runner after all…
