Vintage RC10 MIP Cable 4WD Conversion Project

Post by lotus15racer »

Hi
After a long layoff, I'm working on my MIP 4WD conversion. So far I have both front and rear gearboxes and the cable installed. I had to bend the front chassis braces, and now it looks like I will need to add spacers to join them to the front plate. Any ideas how to do this better?

From the Googled image I found, it appears only the drive side nose tube was bent.

Cool project!

Looks great so far. Since you have the MIP rear transmission case, you should try to find a Hot Trick motor/ transmission mount. They made them in Red and Gold. I can't wait to see the end result.

Drill 3 holes in a triangle of green fiberglass, looks like 1" apart should do. Make twoTop hole is for the (new, longer) nose brace tube, front hole is for original nose brace position in chassis, rear hole you'd drill a second hole behind the original tube mount and at the same height. This should provide a straight nose tube which you want for strength. It will also reinforce the chassis where it was cut away for the set back steering arms. An inch may be too much, but you only have to go as low as the tranny (unless you'd cut a hole in the body for that?).

Or, you could make a nose brace out of fiberglass sheet, with a bulge in the middle hollowed out for the cable to pass through. Connect at the front with an L bracket. ( -------0---- )

Thanks for the replies. I will look for a Hot Trick motor mount. That looks like an excellent part. As for the bent tubes, good ideas. I will try to also a set of straight ones and re mount them or maybe 'ill try a piece of fiberglass. Anyway here is a close up of the area:

It appears if you could get the front tranny more centered, your right nose tube could be straight.

Hi
I tried to center the front gearbox considering that the drive axles are both the same length. Also the slipper clutch adjuster gets in the way of the chassis brace. It's a compromise I guess.

Great build to start out here. Welcome and keep up the good work!

I've studied all of the photos I could find on these, including the one bubbleboy posted. In that photo, I think that left nose tube was first mounted directly to the nose plate and then modified on the back end of the tube with new chassis mount holes drilled. But MIP's instructions only suggest that the "nose brace can be modified to clear cable", so get creative! :D

Joe Marrone car here. He seems to have fit his in nicely! Definitely looks like yours needs centered, and the slipper tightened.
