MIP Trans

Post by R Cane »

Ok, maybe a dumb question, but I've never had a MIP transmission.
Do you need MIP gears, or can you use the AE gears?

You do have to have MIP gears with the SP2 transmission as the gears are a different size and use metric bearings. Not quite sure about the yellow third generation case.

Two different MIP transmissions for the RC10.

Older one used internals that were based on the gears from the original MIP trans for the Tamiya SRB cars. They're interchangeable with modern SRB trans parts with only minor modification.

The 2.65 (really 2.6) MIP Changebox trans used the top shaft and outdrives from a Stealth but had it's own diff gear and idler.

By chance did you win that eBay pan car chassis lot today with the MIP Changebox halves in it?

No, but that auction was the reason I asked the question. Got me wondering about the compatibility between the AE and MIP. I was considering that auction, but the DISH network guy showed up to install new satellite stuff, and I got distracted and forgot about it. Figures, the price wasn't too bad.

I had the auction bookmarked but forgot to check on it today.

That was the later MIP Changebox trans in that lot. I don't like those...I've got several little niggles about it that annoy me. :x

I could have used the 10L parts, but the MIP was a good part of my interest, just so I could get one in my hand and check it out. So what was the positive for using the MIP? Stronger? More durable?

The positive for the older MIP trans was it was a 3 gear trans vs a 6 gear.

What was supposed to be the positive for the Changebox was the gear ratio...it was specifically meant to be a RC10T upgrade transmission to deal with the larger trucks tires.

I didn't really have a usage plan for it. I was just interested mainly as an educational thing. I've never had a MIP trans, so I just wanted to see what it was all about.
I probably would have tried it some vehicle or another at some point, but that was really secondary. Just wanted to learn more about the thing.

Nice. Did you run it with the standard trans also? Notice differences in performance?

Allegedly, you could narrow a B4 diff gear and use it. I did test fit the size, it was good, but never got any further before getting rid of it.

Yeah I fit a GT diff in the one I had....just required a little shaving inside the case halves. Problem was the idler gears are poorly molded and don't mesh well with the GT gear. Big time binding.

Never found a replacement for the idler. The MIP instructions call the idler a 35 tooth but it's really a 32...though I think it's actually a larger diameter than a regular 48p 32t gear. :|

that doesn't sound possible if you are supposed to use the stealth top shaft.
