Looks like the body was designed on the ESC models as there is a slight bit of contact with the suicide switch and some wiring.

Recommendations? I'd spring for a cheap electronic speed control for brushed motors and ditch that way old-school resistor unit and servo. I'm seeing decent units from HobbyWing and HPI on eBay for less than $20.

I'm going to price a few. I would like to have reverse. I wonder how hard converting would be?

How much is a hot brushed motor these days?

I ordered a hobbywing 1060esc, a 7cell battery and a hpi 15t motor.
Too much?

It was so slow when I test drove it, that I immediately started looking for improvements and ordered a new ESC, battery, and motor.

The new stuff, especially with a NiMh battery, and I'm assuming a brushed motor, won't be terribly fast either. If you got a nice Lipo with a decent "C" rating, and a brushless 15T motor, it'd be rather quick.

I test drove the car with a 1500mah battery and the original motor and MSC. It was noticeably less powerful than when it was new.

I didn't want to go brushless, or radically change the car and make it difficult to handle or damage the transmission.
So I was hoping a 7cell and a 15t brushed motor would liven it up.
I hope it is at least a little faster than when it was new with the 27t, MSC, and 6cell.
Back then it hit jumps with authority, would do donuts at will, and would run out if radio range in a hurry if I wasn't careful.

With this new ESC I should be able to run lipo if I decide to , I believe? That would be a nice upgrade.

At the very least , with this ESC I should lose some weight , gain reverse, and a little programmability, I hope. I hope this one can be set to kill the throttle after losing radio signal. This car used to pin the throttle in those situations and become a runaway RC.

you can run any esc with a lipo, it just won't have a cutoff if it's not 'lipo capable'. use an external alarm or just use until you can just see the power drop slightly.

you can get a feel for it based on charging your lipo:
say you ran the car 10 minutes on a fully charged 5000mah battery. then charge it and find it takes 2600mah to make it fully charged, you know you have about 18 minutes or so on this capacity.

The battery alarms are peanuts on eBay; I have one in each of my cars. Way cheaper than replacing a damaged lipo.

The ESC I bought has 2S/3S capability. I assume it has a shutoff.

The Magnum Jr transmitter seems to have developed a problem with its steering wheel. Any recommendations on a replacement?

On a side note, the second charge on my new 6cell ran much better. Still unimpressive, but more fun.

You can find cheap LiPo's online that are actually pretty good. Here's a few to look at:

The switch to Lipo's is dramatic.

As for the radio, it all depends on how much you want to spend. Radios are the one thing in RC where you truly get what you pay for. So if anything you can spend money on, it's the radio. I'd recommend the Airtronics MT-4, you can find used ones for a reasonable price, that's how I got mine.

Well , I'm trying not to spend much more getting this car going, so I ordered a 2s lipo
(Turnigy Brand Lithium Polymer (LiPo)
2 Cell (3S1P) 7.4 volts
2200MAH
25C constant discharge rate (35C burst discharge rate)
and a cheap Flysky FS-GT2E tx rx combo. I grabbed a balanced charger and an adapter plug for the lipo too.
Hopefully when those and the rest of my associated parts come in, I can put together a fun little basher.
