Introduction & sharing my new acquisitions: RC10, RC12L, etc

Post by ChimpanZed »

Hey all! I've been into RC since I was about 6 and I'll be 40 in March. I've been on a bit of a sentimental streak as of late, which when combined with beer and eBay at 1am, has resulted in what you're about to see :D . While I haven't been seriously into RC cars since the early 90s, I was a fanatical 1980s RC kid who obsessed over every issue of Radio Control Car Action, would dog-ear the Tower Hobbies annual catalog, and got all the kids in my neighborhood into RC.

I firmly believe that RC is what led me to pursue engineering and to eventually work in NASA Mission Control. In fact, in my role as an ADCO (Attitude Determination and Control Officer), I "piloted" the International Space Station from Houston during dockings with the Space Shuttle, Soyuz, and other visiting vehicles. I guess you could say that the ISS is my most elaborate venture into "remote control" .

As a kid I had a few RC cars that I loved: Tamiya Frog, Team Associated RC10, Tamiya Super Sabre, Tamiya Avante, Team Losi JRXT, OFNA Pirate, TRC Lynx Elite II. I also had an RC12L kit that was never completed. My recent mission is to acquire original and/or rerelease models that I had as a kid, along with the associated equipment. I don't know if I plan on actually driving any of this stuff, but for now I'm enjoying the trip down memory lane.

RC10 A Stamp. This car is pretty clean. The previous owner said he drove it once and put it in a box. I believe it. I have the original box (GREAT shape) and body (not great). I plan on relocating the ESC, replacing one front A-arm with a NOS unit, knocking the remaining mud off, and giving it a new box art body. It will be a display model.

RC12L Carbon Fiber. This car looks like it was never run. I have the original box and a new-in-bag body from ~1983 (?). This thing is too perfect to mess with, so I plan to just clean it up, do an aftermarket body like the box art, and leave this as a display model.

RC12L Fiberglass. This is pretty busted, but workable. I'll likely make this one a runner. The radio equipment uses Futaba G plugs!

Futaba Magnum PCM1024. This radio is in perfect condition. It looks like it's been hermetically sealed for 25+ years. I haven't tested it, but will do so. The matching Rx is in the RC12L Carbon Fiber model.

Futaba Magnum Junior & Pro-Tech Charger. This is the kind of radio and charger that I had with my first car, the Tamiya Frog (that my dad got me after buying it off of a coworker). This radio would not power up with new batteries.

MRP Hydro Sport. I had one of these as a kid and decided I needed another one. Great $40 eBay find complete with radio, etc. I plan on modernizing this and running it.

And everything together:

The Frog is a rerelease, and I have a rerelease Bruiser on the way from Hong Kong. I also have an RC10 rerelease which I'm looking forward to building and running. I would like to pick up an original Avante and JRXT as well, with boxes preferably. That exact PT boat was my very first RC vehicle, and the only one from my childhood to survive to this day.

Anyway, thanks for checking out my stuff. I look forward to getting to know you all.

That's the second tub I've now seen with that screwed up cut at the front edge.

Interesting. Anybody have history on this? It must be factory.

It's just a blem, like screw holes that weren't countersunk. Some things are missed.

First off, welcome to the forums! Those are some nice finds you have there and will clean up well. I, and pretty much everyone here can attest to the combination of beer, nostalgia and late night eBay

Secondly, that was the first thing that caught my eye about your RC10 as well...

I assume Jason is referring to this:
Gold-Pan-Cut-Out.jpg
If it is a blemish, whoever made the mistake did a nice job cleaning it up

Does the front edge have gold annodizing on it?

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I figured that I'm not the only guy with an itchy trigger finger on eBay :D.

The front edge is definitely anodized:

Gotta be a rare tub. Makes me wonder just how early of an A stamp that car is?

It's a very late Cadillac.

It might be that the cut in the front will match with the back end.
If the tubs were stamped in a row from the same sheet metal.
