RC10 Graphite project

Post by dinglem »

Following on from my other 'Graphite Custom' thread, I have decided to build up another pair of cars from my spares stash. One will be a gold pan A-stamp chassis and the other will be a Graphite.

As a base for the latter I have managed to find a very tidy Graphite chassis as can be seen here.

To go with this I also have an original A&L belt transmission and matching A&L steering set-up, both in a lovely original light lime-ish green colour. The pics don't really show the colour, but in normal light they really pop!

There is also an unused Robinson rear toe-in adjuster, front and rear carbon fibre shock towers and some RCPS Cliff Lett titanium suspension hinge pins.

I have my original gold Associated shocks (and in fact complete suspension set up as I went to a full Yokomo suspension conversion on my original car) so plenty of bits to work with. I am considering Andy's wishbones for it, and I have just posted up another thread seeking details about a black pair of rear wishbones that came with the chassis when purchased - i haven't seen any like them before.

I'll try to update the thread as I progress and hopefully gain a little help and advice along the way. Still gathering parts at the moment.

Thanks to a couple of swift-answering members I have already managed to ID my mystery rear wishbones.

Turns out they are Raborn items, and it also clears up another mystery as they came with a pair of sliding rear shafts too.

Quick Google search and it looks like i have the set, although I must confess I know nothing about them. Pretty cool though 8)

Another long-standing and quiet thread, but I have started to make a little progress with this build now. Still a way to go, but a quick update for the time being.

Firstly, I managed to get my hands on a very cool bespoke rear shock tower made by a fellow owner. Just the kind of thing I was looking for. Double thickness for added strength. I just need to source a matching front upright now with a similar weave.

I still have my original set of silver-chrome HPI rims from bitd, so I am keen to retain those and use them where possible mainly out of nostalgia towards my old stuff. They will suit the overall look I am going for with this build I think, and I just LOVE the dish on the rears!

Shocks are going to be a super rare set of threaded Brimods, the ones with the bleed valve grub screw in the cap. Beauties! I have a new in bag pair of fronts (which I haven't opened), but here they are in case some of you haven't seen them before. These were considered pretty exotic over in the UK back in the late 80's when I was first starting out.... very expensive at that time. I have since lightly sanded a front and rear pair to polish them up to a lovely gleaming as-new finish.

Just the fronts polished here, but you get the idea.

The Raborn Racing dished rear wishbones and matching telescopic dampers have gone on really well, and I have used a set of titanium hinge pins on this build too whilst I was at it... they seem a bit short though so I have to address that. Either short, or the wishbone pivot points are too thick. They are supposedly some of the toughest wishbones out there, so that could be why! Now the shafts are in I finally got a chance to feel how smooth the Lethal Weapon diff and gearbox is. Buttery!!!

Motor will be a very tidy looking Demon modified, again continuing the British slant, and also representing some of the motors I ran bitd. That hologram sticker evokes a lot of great memories for me from racing in the late 80's and early 90's.
43951838_871676756365047_3729956406816669696_n.jpg

Body wise, well I have always liked the look of the Turbo Mirage, so that is what I went for. I must admit I like a low bodyshell on my cars, and have always disliked the rear part of any RC10 shell (the bit behind the rear shock tower), so as per usual I have removed this part. I also never ever used to paint my wings, and instead left them clear with decals, so I have started to do the same. Still have to add some side plates and a wing mount wire, as well as the Brimods once the front tower has been replaced but here is a mock-up of how the car looks so far. Starting to look just how I had pictured it 8)

This is going to be a fascinating build! So unique.
And, what a great collection of vintage parts; some I'm familiar with and many I've never seen before.
I have a set of those wheels (I love the style) but unfortunately they are for the truck and are much too large to suit a buggy.

Yeah I love the HPI's too. I remember being excited when I bought them, but the reason they have lasted unscathed is that we switched my RC10 Graphite over to a full Yokomo Works '91 suspension set up shortly after, so ran Yoke rims on it. As such the HPI's sat in my tyre box until now. At least they are getting an airing again, and will really suit the look I am going for I think!

Glad you like all of the parts - I have been quietly gathering them up for a fair while now.

Well it has literally taken me forever to find the front tower to match my rear.... but I now finally have the last missing piece of the jigsaw for this build to go ahead and be finished off.

Again it is double thickness, with a cut-away strengthening feature. Looks pretty funky!

Yeah, they always did look great, and nice to be able to use some of my original parts from back then on this build. Otherwise they would just be sat in my spares box forever more, which would be a real shame.

It is starting to look just how i pictured it when i started collecting up the parts now. Just got to put it all together and sort the electrics. I already have a Tekin 600 Pro XT Tempfet esc and KO FET PS-87 servo ready to go in.
