HPI Super Star Chrome RC10 wheels

Post by dinglem »

Hi all,

Does anybody know whether the 'chrome' versions were just painted metallic silver?

I have my original set of these - lovely deep dish on the rears and it look like the finish is rubbing off the fronts very slightly in a few places. I was just wondering whether i might be able to just touch them up a little as I would really like to use them on one of my Graphite builds.

I'm actually really pleased that I still have my original set!

I've had some that are plated and some that are painted. The plated ones chip off in chunks. The painted ones rub down like yours seem to be doing. Worse case scenario if you touch them up and you don't like it is you find a different use for them. I'd go for it and they pop up on ebay from time to time so if you don't like how they turn out you can always pick up another set.

Let us know how it turns out 8)

Thanks Todd,

I think you are right. It is only the fronts which seems to be rubbing off, as the rears which are mint have been stored (for about 20 years!) with tyres on to protect the faces from contact.

I'll take a closer look at them and see if i can source some suitable metallic silver paint.

In the meantime i'll keep em peeled for another pair of fronts.

Cheers Mart.

Mart,
not sure on your side of the pond but Krylon used to have a metallic paint called satin chrome or something to that sort that was a good match to the painted type wheels. Good enuf that no one ever suspected the fronts were repaints and the back were factory. If I come across that can or the name falls outta the cobwebs in my head I'll get you the actual name.
