Orangemazda's Cliff Lett '90 ROAR Nats replica

Post by orangemazda »

Guys, Here's my attempt at building a replica. It seems a lot harder to do then building a custom car because there is no creative freedom, you've got to adhere as closely to the original as possible and the finding of very specific parts.

With that said, here she is so far:

I've got a few questions for you guys who have already built or are building one of these Cliff Lett replicas.

First does anyone know where I can get a set of 4 of the hard ano'd shock caps?
IMG_7430.JPG
Also in this pic, are those Yokomo rod ends or just standard Associated shock ends?

In this next pic, what is this rear body mount from? Also, what shiny universal joints did Cliff use?

And in this last pic that I stole from scr8p's build thread, is there anyone out there who can make me a carbon fiber trans brace like this one? Also, who has a hobby lathe who can whittle down a front body mount for me?

Sorry man, I forgot about your PM. I had a lot going on yesterday.........

Shock caps you will find basically nowhere. Only team drivers got them. And, it doesn't seem like anyone can match it. Not to mention, the rear shocks are done in the teflon coating used on the MIP shock bodies (99.9% sure). So there are 2 different coatings on the shocks and can't get either of them done. Biggest reason i haven't bothered to finish mine.

Yokomo rod ends

Not sure what Cliff used, but I cut down a 10lss rear body mount.

jwscab made the trans brace and machined the body post for mine.

yeah, your best bet on the shocks would be to get gold ones reanodized a dark grey. it's really hard coated but the hard coated is then teflon infused, so there is really no way to know how to reproduce it well to match exactly.

you can hit me up in PM if you are interested in the other parts, I can probably make that rear post out of a standard post just machined differently than the front.

I don't mean to be argumentative but after doing a Google search, looking at Yokomo tierod ends, it looks to me that the Yokomo ends have hexagon shaped bodies. It appears to me that the ones Cliff used on his RC10 have cylindrical bodies which lead me to believe that they are Associated shock ends? I have found some Yokomo threaded balls in 5.8mm which is the same as the .230 balls used on the RC10 shock ends. Also, if you compare the body of the Yokomo ends, the body and head are the same thickness whereas the ones on Cliffs car, the body is thicker then the head, similar to shock ends. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I could be wrong. It just always looked like a hex to me in the pics I have.

I'm going to side with Orangemazda on them being AE shock ends.

It probably is. It just always looked like a hex in the pics I had so that is what I had set aside for mine.

Had I known Cliff was going to be coming to the Vonats again this year, I probably would have thrown it together. I may still take what I have for him to sign it. Might as well. I would have taken my '88 replica of his but I sent it up to Erich last year to have him sign it since I couldn't make it. Who knew he would come 2 years in a row....

Could very well be shock ends. They are yokomo balls though, they have to be threaded otherwise you would see a screw head or nut on the back side of the tower right in that high interference area.

For a replica it doesn't really matter. Whatever you can reasonably approximate.

I think these are the ones:

I know that the ones we need are 5.8mm.

I don't think those are the ones they look more like the associated lower shock rod ends like the ones a couple posts above.

You think so? I was thinking they were the slim ball to get it tight to the shock tower.

This replica business is tough!

I can't wait to get to the shock hurdle!

I ran into an "easier" snag while putting the stealth together. I don't have the thrust assembly number 6586. I know there was a later brass bushing version but not sure of the number on that one. Anyone have either version for sale?

I saw this on eBay, do you suppose this would work?
