RC10DS - White Parts Special

Post by LoboNYC »

Story: A while back i got two DS cars in trade for a new in boxed tamiya f201 ferrari. One was restored into a Lamborghini DS http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=36795.

The "RC10DS White Parts Special" was born from the second DS. First off, the chassis was scratched and then painted over with a black sharpe so a new one was needed. i acquired a full set of Dyno-Tech racing white nylon arms and thought of mating them to an anodized emerald green DS chassis i have been saving.

Then i thought i could use the carbon DS chassis i have...

Sandkil suggested a black and white themed DS carbon chassis build so it was begun.

The Dyno-Tech racing arms

i decided to take remove the black powder coating off the nose plate and engine mount with some EasyOff oven cleaner and sandpaper.

I swapped out the original stock DS black parts for white parts.

I replaced all brass bushings with bearings

Replaced the stock black ball ends with RPM white ones

The hubs and suspension arm mounts were placed on a carbon DS chassis by Xtreme Racing

The Dyno-Tech Racing arms are installed along with a set of GPM blue anodized front suspension arm mounts

Problem enountered with the white arms...they are missing the hole for the shock mount

Problem solved by removing the anti roll bar and reassigning the hole to fulfill shock mount tab duties. RPM long shank ball cup ends were needed to compensate for the reduced ride height caused by the repositioning of the shock.

I've been waiting for this to pop up. The car looks awesome Alex. Black and white combo has been my all time favorite in the Associated cars progression.

Looking nice. If you wanted white front arm mounts too you could mod a set of buggy front mounts and use a set of tapping inserts to reduce the 8-32 holes to use 4-40 screws.

Not sure if the front shock tower would mount right up to them though.

you could always remove the anodizing from the arm mounts and give them some elbow grease to polish them up a bit.

if you are running it, you might want to work in the nose tubes somehow.

you could also look into making fiberglass towers to match the battery strap too.

I have a set of the front blue arms mounts that some idiot used a longer bolt and put a nut on top and scratched it. I was thinking about stripping mine but I really want to keep them blue.

I really like how the wheels turned out. I have some scratched up chromies that might just get this treatment 8)

Looks great overall

Thanks Todd, Ive been wanting to post this for a little while now but i needed to make more progress. I have a set of long black RPM ball cup ends to replace the blue ones currently on the front shocks. The body choice is still up in the air...im waiting for an original DS BMW body to arrive. I may go original or just opt for an HPI body...im still thinking about it.

Thanks for the suggestion but i want to stick with original AE parts. At this point in time im not crazy about using 3D printed parts.

Thanks, Maybe i will try mounting a unique body on it :D

Thanks Phin, cool idea but im sticking with the blue anodized mounts. I may just remove the blue and polish them to look like the nose and motor plate.

Thanks man. I hope she runs as good as she is looking. I have a castle brushless setup waiting to get installed on her

HAHAHA jwscab....i've had the removal of the anodized blue layer already on the brain...i almost started that, when working on the nose and motor plate...but had no elbow grease left, lol. Im definitely running this so incorporating the nose tubes has been on my mind since i started. i was trying the GT nose tubes along with the tube braces but its a tricky situation. i'll figure something out.

I was going to say remove the blue anodize off them and polish the scratches off....but i just read you like the blue

Thanks Todd, Ive had those wheels for a while but never used them because it was just too odd......till this build. Now they feel right at home on this car

8) Nice looking DS! Those wheels turned out great too! Are you using the clear tubes on the front body posts for the body to rest on?

Thanks a bunch Erik....I take that as a compliment since your builds are outstanding and detailed.

Thanks, I may end up de-chroming a few more wheels myself. The clear tubes were on the DS before i started the restoration...I left them on till I decide on the body. I usually use body clips with the plastic discs to support the body.

Heres an update to the RC10DS White Parts Special...

The rear of the car lacked a motor guard...i couldnt find one so i cut up an old chassis. I trimmed and attached it to the carbon chassis
Image

I polished the outside of the guard....
Image

.... and left the inside powder coated black
Image

I had to trim the center so it would clear the tranny...hey what do you know? a "C" chassis :D
Image

Fits perfect
Image

Now for the front nose support. Someone chopped up the front nose area of a chassis and attched it to the carbon fiber chassis in order to support the nose tubes. That was really cool idea but i went a different route. I used a set of trinity nose tube braces for the RC10GT...something i got in the mail from Romulus22 one day a while back. THANKS ROMULUS22 THEY FINALLY WENT TO GOOD USE! I used the long GT nose tubes in order to get the braces farther back onto the wider part of the chassis. Each brace is secured to the chassis via two screws.
Image

Im still contemplating on a body....
