What is the best way to mount pan car tires

Post by shodog »

Like the title says, what is the best way to mount them? Using contact cement or using double sided tape?

Same here, I also very carefully put a little CA around the edge of the rim using a toothpick. Keeps the edges tucked in nice and neat.

Coat tire and rim with contact, let dry till it's barely tacky, coat tire and rim with turpentine and slip together with the face down onto something hard and flat. Let dry completely and true.

You only get one shot so don't stop half way.

Hmm...I would sy the "cleanest" Way to mount tyres to onroad wheels is to use the "undersoupwater doublesided tape" way (no glue on hands/tyres/wheels; if a good quality carped tape is used you could drive the car (6 cells/540 mabuchi) with no problem (I would not recomend this way if you run 1:12 mod 3T - there I use a good glue (Patte**) with CA at the tyre sides) - takes a little time to dry (overnight)...

You need:....

Clean the wheels with brake cleaner and wrap the double sided tape on the wheels (cut whith scissors and exacto so there is no "overlay")...

Prepare for the next step - you need a soap and a smaller screwdriver (don`t need a special one as in the pictures - just like that with a thin but strong shaft)...

...now carefully slip the tyre on the wheel...its best to do this underwater...position the wheel at where the edges of the ends of the double side tape come together...take your time...little by little... push the tyre and it will flip on the wheel by itself...

...and now something important: get your screwdriver complet between the tape and the tyre (the tip should look out on the other side of the wheel) and turn the wheels around with the other hand so the rims could set exactly on the wheels...it takes just 2-3 rounds...its easy to do this in the water...just take your time...if the tyre sits exactly just remove the screwdriver with a short strong "push"...

Look is much better if you remvove the "not needed part" of the double side tape with an exacto knive...

If you realy get in trouble or the tyre position on the wheel is not right or even the double sided tape is scratched or unusable you have enough time to temove the tyre (underwater) and start from step 1...

Don`t use a cheap tape but also not a double sided tape used for electronics (the thicker white/black ones)...just a good quality tape for carpeds like Te**a (I used a tape named "Bastelklebeband" - see pictures)...

Removing the foam tyres later from the wheels is quite easy...just cut the foam with a sharp knive and you can remove the tyre including the tape - the wheel is ready for a new tyre without the mess of a tyre truer...I used to run the front tyres of my 12L (with cut down front axles) completely off/down to the tape in the 90`s but motor power was limited in stock class with 6 cells and a 540er Mabuchi!
