Thanks, it's getting there. All K&N filters are red but the breather for some reason is extremely red, almost like the gauze is bright red.

I don't mind the color of K&N filters, just the breather is a bit too bright for my liking.
klavy69 wrote: Fri Mar 10, 2017 8:36 pm If you are having an issue with the red color of the K&N filters you can always pick up a different color prefilter. Outerwears makes like 4+ different colors of prefilter wraps. I know I've seen yellow, red, blue, black and I think they have a couple different colors. I use 'em on all my K&N filters but because I hate cleaning those things...

I run a K&N prefilter on my truck as it gets used in dirty environments, the car not so much, lol.

Well, I haven't done much on the 9 inch but I've been gearing myself up to do more of this stuff. While in the process of aquiring the necessary stuff to do axle work I discovered that the axle in my other Fairlane was bent, the runout measured on the axle flange was .015" where the general consensus is a max of .005" is acceptable. You could see the caliper moving back and forth on the bracket and one of the slide pins actually fell out, quite dangerous really !!! I've fixed it temporarily by stealing a pin from a spare set of calipers I had laying around. I will replace the rear axle and calipers shortly.

The rear caliper was a real ordeal as apparantly major overhaul kits have been discontinued, remember my pin I borrowed, you guessed it, only available in a major overhaul kit. So I run around at least 1/2 a day to different stores to find one, nope, nope and nope. Luckily one place that does brake work reluctantly sold me a second hand pin so I was happy. The minor kits are still available which are seals only, there are these special star like washers that hold the seals in the end of the slide pins, nope, not available either. I basically had to refurbish everything, I did however have to buy a new piston since mine had some pitting that couldn't be removed. I can't believe how many parts are in the rear caliper. I left the parking brake bracket off as the one I need is different, I'll have to swap them over when I pull the calipers off the car.

The fronts were a piece of cake compared to the rears..

This is quite a stupid design mounting the rear rotor behind the flange, the only way to remove the disk is to pull the axle, remove the bearing and retainer plate, and press it all back together.... Pretty much all parts ready to be assembled with a freshly machined disk. I just need to rebuild the other caliper and I can swap axle assemblies over. The 9" axles/ends are identical in design just with a different spline count.

This is going on my daily driver so I'm not worried if it looks pretty or not.

More brake stuff.......

The forum is slow and I finally had a day to myself to do car stuff. I finally got around to doing the other front caliper and thought I'd do a little "slideshow" of the different steps.

My white ZH will be getting these rebuilt calipers and a set of slotted and dimpled rotors to go along. Money has been tight this last month or so and there hasn't been much progress as a result.

1.) Caliper before, pretty sad looking.

2.) Caliper was a shit of a thing to get apart, I had to cut the slide pins to seperate the body. One of the anti-rattle clips was also stuck solid.

3.) Finally apart ready to clean.

4.) Bead blasted clean, actually starting to look good.

5.) Cleaned up the cylinder and grooves with green scotchbrite, it's amazing what crap gets in the cylinder bore.

6.) All prepped, painted and ready for assembly, unfortunately I had to buy a new piston as the original was pitted.

I ran out of daylight to photograph the assembly so maybe I'll make that part 2....

7.) These are the type of rotors I will be getting.

Finishing the car is long overdue  I keep getting distracted with other things like RC and I went on a tool buying spree to be able to do more. I must say that the bead blasting cabinet was one of the best things I purchased.

Hopefully I can make a bit of a push and finish it this year.

A must have for any car guy.

I've been saying that about my 55 since 2001. :|

Your 55 will probably be 1000 times nicer than my car when finished, lol. I'm going for the ratty muscle/sleeper look at the moment. The only reason for wasting so much cash is everything will transplant straight into about 6 different cars if this one is "too far gone"

I picked up a nice semi-professional spray gun to one day hopefully throw a decent coat of paint on it.

I'm not really doing anything body wise to my car because i want to retain as much of the originally as possible. So other than painting the fronts of the fenders because of putting in new headlight caps, and eventually it will get new outer rockers and a tail pan, this is how it will stay. The suspension and drive train is getting updated though.

I know they aren't as desirable. But I do like the 4drs too. So much more practical

I think it's more "socially acceptable" (if you want to call it that) these days to have a 4dr because the prices for solid 2 doors are crazy. The whole goal for mine was to convert it to a 2dr. Found a 2 door shell to get the needed structural parts (B post and inner quarters), and I have 2dr quarters and doors. But, those were plans 15 years ago. If I even attempt to start it, I know it will never get done. If I just concentrate on getting it on the road as a 4dr I may actually drive it one day.

Not much of an update but I dropped my 9" housing off today to get chemically stripped back to bare metal and also ordered a full set of wheel bearings. My stainless brake hoses came in the other day so things are slowly happening. I couldn't believe how expensive the hoses were but at least they are DOT approved and marked as street legal. I could have bought cheaper hoses but they don't mention anything about being street legal. When I researched stainless hoses the ends popping off seemed to be scarily common, so I opted for the presumably better hoses.

Makes me wonder what braided lines I bought. That's the last thing I need. All of my lines are coming out of a single line from the master. With no form of emergency/parking brake. I plan on correcting this eventually, probably add a second master at some point
