I'd like to make it somewhat of an old school trailing arm car, with original style front and rear tires, gold shocks, etc. I still need quite a few parts to get started though.

I'm checking out the felt seals and retainers and noticing that the retainers do not fit very well, loose as heck. Is there a slick fix/mod to this issue? I don't want to ca glue them in place :?

IMHO If its going on the shelf, a small piece of tape applied to the outer ring surface will provide a friction fit and won't be visible when assembled. If it's a runner then CA is probably your best bet. Apply a tiny amount to the back face of the tab will hold it in place and will allow for easy removal later.

I always drilled a small hole and used a single 2-56 or 4mm button head on my cars

Most people will tell you to slide a bearing on there. You can, but it wrecks the gear alignment and tends to tighten up the mesh. The fix is to remove the unflanged bearing from the lower gear and use a spacer. There’s a tutorial around here somewhere.

Personally, I’d say remake those bad boys with a small hole in the ear and drill the case. That would be slick

I used the tape method on the Graphite and CE restoration projects lately in an attempt to maintain originality and yet not risk spoiling NIP parts. However, if your not going for originality then I could definitely see something made from... oh, I donno... titanium perhaps? :D

Hmmmm, looks like I need a material of 1" diameter to do the retainers... which I don't have :(

To do it in titanium would cost 40 bucks in material vice 10 bucks in delrin.
