This is an ongoing system ,
Spot on, this is why you see real car's of the 1980's and even 90's starting to hit their stride. While I can appreciate a 1969 Mustang, it has no emotional connection to me like it did my dad. But a 1989 5.0, yes please. Same thing for RC cars, I enjoy new builds but they actually are truly utilitarian and disposable to me, no emotion like a 1990 car to me.

Will kids today view current cars as collectors one day, I tend to think not as we live in more and more of a throw away society with no apprecation for the past. Or at a minimum they will be collecting old I phones, vehicles of all types seem to matter less and less.

Very well stated. Certainly, the desire to collect an object is borne from our personal and emotional connection to that object, as others have pointed out. Vintage cars are a great example. The auction prices for cars produced before 1950 have plummeted over the past 25 years while those for ‘60’s muscle cars for instance have risen. The generations who have experienced a personal connection to that old Ford model T have passed away and unfortunately subsequent generations simply don’t show much interest in objects they’ve never possessed in the past. I refer to auction prices here merely as a way to measure overall desire-ability. Like my RC’s, my small collection of vintage motorcycles is of minor auction value but I, and perhaps others from my generation, still desire them because of that emotional connection.

Wow, this is a fascinating conversation!

Another factor to consider is where the economy is at any given time. Collectibles and hobbies seem to be the first thing to come to a grinding halt in times when money is tighter. I had a Hot Wheels collection in the late 90's that was appraised around $10,000. When things got rough around 2008, I was only able to get a few hundred for them. It's my opinion that the vintage rc market will carry on as many of you have stated, but for it to thrive, the newer generation of what is considered "vintage" will have to progressively change. Guys that work at one of the lhs where I live have sold off their racers and switched to crawlers and more recently fpv quadcopters. Just think, someday there will be vintage rc drones.

How about rising house prices affecting rc collecting in the future?
Apparently i live in "the worlds most livable city" melbourne, australia.
Its getting really expensive to live here and i believe future generations just wont have the extra cash for expensive hobbies.

I will never own some of the cars of my dreams, but getting back into rc has given me some nostalgia and also helps with the tinkerer in me.
I get to modify, build and restore at fraction of the price of the real deal, not to mention the space saving of 1:10th!

Could vintage rc become more popular due to economic reasons?

I submit this thread as to why a Forum is better than Facebook.
