Where Do You Charge Your Lipos ?

Post by Beatnik »

Simple curiosity and a question, where do you charge your lipos, kitchen, garage, patio, alley ? Do you use fire proof bags or ____?

I usually charge on concrete floor or a metal stool inI my basement with a bunch of open space around it. I keep ones I'm not using in an ammo box with the lid closed but not latched.

I charge at whatever power point is free, without any bags or containers or anything.

Probably not the safest thing but I've never had a problem with lipo's. I would recommend to everyone else to charge in a bag though.

I had a Nexus tablet a few years ago that quit and still had my info in it, so we popped it with a hammer like you would a hard drive or something to trash it not even thinking about the battery inside. That thing went off like you would not believe. Knocked it off the bench into a 5 gallon bucket and it burned a hole through the bottom before I got it outside. Lot's of smoke too. lol at my stupidity.

I'd hate to do something wrong charging or have one decide to go here in the house. Just curious what others are doing safety wise.

I charge on my desk in my room, usually about 10A. No bags, no safety crap just common sense I.E. not leaving them alone

I was lucky enough to help Schumacher develop the Core RC LiPo's back in the day and I was taught everything from someone who helped pioneer them in the airplane world when they really were dangerous. I learned what you can and can't do with them, also got to light some fire with some for testing.

Sure they can be dangerous but that's only if you don't treat them like a Galaxy Note 7

If some one is sitting at their dining table watching the batteries charge and all of a sudden one decides to flame, what do you do in that instant ?

What do you do with a puffy pack? I heard you submerse them in salt water for a week  is that actually correct?

I read somewhere you soak them overnight in salt water or until they read 0.0 v and toss them in the trash.

I don't get carried away with a dining room table or desk but

is about how I charge mine too. I don't store mine in anything fancy or whatever but pretty much out in the open in a kit box/bag on the concrete floor so if they do go they won't take anything else with it.

It doesn't take all night but for safety sake I'd leave them overnight.

I also don't leave them unattended when charging, or check very often. Also unplug from cars even if I leave them in the car.

If your going to store lipos for a little while don't store them fully charged as they can puff up, store them at about 60%.

I have a storage charge on all my lipos but I very very rarely ever use them. I just want to be ready if I ever need to dispose of one
