How to reverse the rotation of a brushed motor??

Post by AYKBOBCAT »

Hello there... I'm not talking much on this board anymore but I keep reading and find most of what I need most of the time but now I'm stuck

I just finished a Kyosho Tomahawk rere and installed a vintage Kyosho Le Mans 480 Gold motor in it. Tried the thing to realize (after 2 evening of swearing) that the motor runs reversed. It's not the ESC and it's not the radio. I tried everything and finally using the same ESC on another motor without changing the settings on the radio... The car behave normally. So the motor turns "backward" (and the polarity of the wires is correct).

The timing can be adjusted on this motor and I know the rotation can be changed on these things but I don't know how to do this... I'm not racing or anything so I never played with these settings... I guess it's time to learn.

Can someone help me with this? Or direct me to a good thread? I did a search and although there are a lot of threads about reversed rotation motors the ones I've seen do not deal with how to actually switch the rotation yourself.

Thanks for the help...

Adjust the timing to the other side of 0 degrees that it was on the positive side, and then reverse the power wires. Positive to where negative was and Negative to where positive was.

I would suggest marking where the timing currently was on the can before turning the endbell so you can always go back to stock.

When you say the polarity of the motor is correct, does that mean the + on the endbell somewhere is where you soldered the red wire? If so and it runs backwards, it's very likely someone has taken the motor apart. Usually on an adjustable timing motor, you can install the endbell 180 degrees out of time and the motor will change directuons, reverse rotation.

If you loosen the endbell(remove brushes first) you should be able to spin the endbell 180 degrees. If not, sometimes there are nubs and parts on the can and endbell and you might have to loosen to the point where you almost remove the endbell to get it to spin. If not, then removing the screws altogether, then lifting and reinstalling the endbell 180 degrees also works.

Yes that's what I meant, red wire on the +. So then it's just a matter of turning the endbell 180 degrees. But then is there something to do with the timing? I position the endbell exactly the same relative to the timing marks?

yes, it if has timing marks, you should be able to align it to whatever timing you want once you rotate it 180 degrees. i couldn't tell you what the stock setting should be for that motor.

For a mod motor 20* is a good starting point.

The adjustable Le Mans motors had timing marks on the sticker on the can, and two arrows printed on the endbell, on opposite sides. There were bigger marks for 0 timing and max timing. I usually just adjusted the endbell to somewhere in the middle or closer to max. If the motor rotation is backwards, just rotate the endbell 180 degrees as the guys said, and adjust timing to your liking.
