Edge-seal woven CF?

When it's R/C related, but doesn't fit anyplace else.

Edge-seal woven CF?

Post by XLR8 »

I just picked up a NIB Schumacher XLS from ebay and it came with a set of GoMachV’s great Factory Works CF chassis parts. Should the modern woven CF be edge sealed and if so what’s the best method? The old CF I have from bitd wasn’t woven and could easily splinter and I recall sealing their edges with CA glue. Is it still necessary to seal woven carbon?

Yeah, I plan to use the G10 parts from the new car to restore my original 80's XLS and make it a shelfer (it currently has a carbon chassis that I cut for saddle packs). The new car built with the new CF parts and the Trinity rear diff, lay-shaft and belts claimed from the vintage car will become my runner. I'm also planning to change the hardware to hex in the runner to make it easier to maintain. So, use CA glue to seal the edges or is there a better method?

That’s the best method I’ve heard of. Just use it sparingly as it’s a pita to clean up haha

Here's what I do:

-Run along the edges a bit with some fine-grit sandpaper, if they're rough; 400-grit or higher is fine. Wipe any carbon dust off the edges.

-Color the edges with a black Sharpie marker.

-Apply CA glue to the edges. I cut a Q-tip in half at a 45-degree angle and use the cut ends to apply the CA.

This results in really spiffy gloss black edges. 8)

Someone else does the sharpie trick  you can also use paint as well to color the edge followed by glue. I use the same method of sanding the edges and applying the CA with a Q-Tip, although lately I've been lazy and running CF without any prep.

Thanks a bunch everyone. The edges of Factory Works carbon parts are crisp, precise and smooth as a baby’s behind. I may sand lightly to break the sharp edge but that’s it. I fully appreciate how he packages his kits; individual parts are heat-sealed into separate compartments in the bag so they don’t crash together during transit. Total quality! I absolutely do not want to mess these up so I will take great care. Thanks again!
