New Member needs some refurb advice for my RC10 Graphite buggy...

Post by Millsie23 »

Hey all, looking for some info on what I should be replacing on my RC10. Literally been sitting in my attic for 20 years(maybe 25)....have a Futaba Magnum Jr controller...all the parts look like they’re there(need antenna for controller and batteries...I’m sure all connections will need to be cleaned...
Should I be taking gear box, shocks apart? Or just get the thing rolling and see what needs to be done...don’t want to spend that much seeing as I’m handing it over to my 12 year old at Christmas(he found it and lost his mind seeing it)....thought it might be cool to get back into the hobby...

Thanks all, looking forward to hearing from you...

Very nice graphite ten! I recently pulled out my old stealth tub ten. Alot of parts will break because they are old. I heard boiling the nylon parts can rejuvinate them. Parts are still available though so I wouldn't worry too much. Hopefully your electronics still work. Be mindful batteries have changed alot since you were in the sport. Probably should have posted this in the vintage buggy forum :)

Wow, beautiful car, looks like a perfect time capsule!

I hesitate to say this... and please take it for what it's worth, but I don't know if I would give that car to a 12 year old. It looks to be in pristine condition, and there are fewer and fewer of them around in that good of condition. If he is going to bash it in the street , jump curbs with it, etc, he will destroy it. Might be better off buying him a modern car (which will be faster, more durable, and easier to get parts for) and displaying this one on a shelf somewhere where you guys can appreciate a well-preserved momento from your youth for years and years to come.

Anyway, there's my unsolicited $.02.

In any case, welcome to 10Talk, enjoy your stay, it's a great community 8)

I'd have to agree with Brian. Its a little bit like handing the keys to a 60's corvette to a 16 year old. In some cases, they would appreciate it for what it is and use it accordingly, but more often than not, there would be something more appropriate for what they plan to do with the car. If the bottom of this car is anywhere near as clean as the top, I would also suggest the idea of getting a car a little better suited to the things he would probably want to do with it.

That being said, the car could probably be run pretty much as-is. An inexpensive 2.4ghz radio might eliminate any potential frustration of radio signal loss or interference, and the battery might not be much good anymore, but the rest of it should work just as it did when you put it away. If you do plan to run this car, definitely look into a chassis protector/skin to keep this valuable chassis in good shape.

Thanks all....def agree with the “handing the keys over”...lol...he is getting another car, just wanted him to be able to give this a whirl...kid can probably build it himself at this point...and the bottom is clean also...

Was thinking of replacing all the plastic parts with new, upgraded versions...also curious to see how the gears and motor have held up....fingers crossed...

I do realize I probably should’ve put this in vintage section...thanks for all the comments and have a great holiday...should be posting the little beast running sooner rather than later...
