Pictures from Back In The Day - Racing

Post by Daryl Lane »

Well I did some Scanning so here goes - :)

#5 Original Dog Fighter set-up for Heavy Metal Class Cox chevy body
#9 MIP Trailing arm chassis with MIP Three gear tranny and RC10 front suspension Tamiya front wheels proline S-10 body
Image

In front of the Yokomo is the Speed control Novak1 and receiver, servo typed to a piece of 1/32" fiberglass that velcroed in and out of the cars. One radio for both cars, tried to save on money.
Image

The bench was full - Mine and two friends cars - #8 Frog withproline S-10, #7 Dog Fighter with the good body, #9 Mip, #4 original RC10 Tub Car, #3 Cox Scorpion, #9 and 1 two more RC10 tube cars.

Image

The mini metal heading into a 15 foot drop at a track in Orange Ca.

Image

The mini metal making the 90 Deg left at the bottom of the drop. Had it setup to run the Yokomo wheels in the rear, wheels had Ranch Pit shop aluminum outside covers on them. We did there to make them look cool.

Image

Early 90's picture of my custom Optima with a Starter impossed handy cap.

Image

First race I ever raced in was the Western Offroad Champianships at RCH in Costa Mesa - I ran the Tamiya Class running a Frog.

Who's the Man in the Hat?

Image

A some Yokomo Dogfighters, two MIP converted RC10 FWD and what looks to be a very early Optima (last car)?

Old is more FUN

Thanks for the pics mate.

In the last pic you posted Daryl, the red car with a 6, is that not a Rough Rider with full MIP 4wd conversion?

Also the pic above, I'd love some of those front Pro-line wheels.

:D Too sweet. Daryl, what year do you think those heavy metal class trucks date too?

I've got a couple pictures of my old stadium truck. I'm about to move though, so they're all packed up. Maybe after I move I can scan them in.

Besides the great cars and shorts  , look at those lovely loamy tracks!!! Much better than blue groove/almost concrete off-road racing.

Ditto. REAL "off road" racing.

Today's tracks suck. They are done by lazy track owners who don't want to maintain a track surface—off road or dirt oval.

X3.... it is now nice to know that I am not the only one who thinks that, even though I really don't have room to talk cause I don't race. BITD, it was Loose Red Georgia clay for me. Made a mess of everything, but I thought it was great to run on.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

Two questions: Why the handicap and How did you tune for that?
The race director/starter was in my race...and was tried of losing... He was a good friend.

No tuning, it fall off in the first turn and I proceeded to Win again - I least that's how I remember it and I am the telling this story.

X4 for sure, I loved loose fluffy tracks - nothing better then spraying the other racers whiching your race with some good old earth! One of the reasons I stopped racing was because of the blue groove tracks and all the whining about tracks bumps and dirty cars.

The Heavy metal trucks were four wheel drive buggies with Full size truck bodies as half ton - trucks did not exist big then so the bodies were made to fit the buggies - they were very cool. The one on my Yokomo was mad by Cox and was a 70's Chevy 1/2 ton

The Mini Metal trucks were two wheel drive buggies with the S-10 or ranger size bodies on them.
Old is more FUN

That Georgia red clay does not wash out. Damn that stuff is persistant. I can't tell you how many pairs of socks I ruined when I lived out there.

Thanks for sharing those photos, Daryl. Those trucks are great. I bet they were a hoot to drive.

You just have to love that outfit that Eustace is wearing. It reminds me of my dad at the beach when I was a kid. Of course, dad wore leather shoes with his.

Daryl, I'm going to piggyback on your post instead of making a new one. This should be the designated BITD racing pics post. :D These are in reverse order. Oldest pics on the bottom.

Cocky older kid once I got an RC10 and started the mod frenzy. I could only afford a Hot Trick chassis at the time and couldn't go graphite yet.

Ok, so here's the pudgy kid I was way back then. More fat and more hair back then! This was the body Doug painted with Testors Model Paint. All the logo's were done by hand on the outside with a brush.
