Re-Re 6-gear transmission questions

Post by RichieRich »

Hey guys...I know this may sound weird, but I've never owned a six gear transmission. All of my builds have either been a stealth or a variation. Anyways, I have a few questions:

1) The spur gear seems to have a little play, like a hair of left/right movement which could introduce some wobble if it's not set fully to the left or right. Is this normal?

2) The right gear on the topshaft is press fit onto the left half of the diff assembly. Really?!?!

3) Lastly, damn is that allen wrench for the idler gears tiny! What size is it?

1) it's basically like a pan car diff, the gear will wobble but will center itself when running

2) yup! With all the cool ball bearing supported inner hubs and thorp gears that was still the way they all were. Just try getting them apart once they are locked down 8)

3) there were better drivers for those .035 bitd, haven't seen one in years. Go slow and they will be fine. People that try to rush it and don't have the Allen fully seated will be unhappy

I'm glad you asked. I build my trans the other night and noticed the spur had some wobble and took it apart to make sure I seated everything right. Good to know (I guess) that it's normal.

btw... if you check a stealth diff... there is some wobble too (although less)... with a ball diff it's simply impossible not to have any, otherwise it can't diff ;)

Yes, I went back and checked. But you're right, without a little space, it would be a spool.

and if you want the warm fuzzy vintage feel, you can spend more and get the thorp/MIP driver:

So the going rate for warm and fuzzy is 3 times more expensive? Probably organic too.

For anything other than those tiny idler gear screws I would stay as far away from Integy drivers as possible. They will round off very quickly, not worth the savings.

I had a complete set of EDS drivers that came with a .035, incidently its the only one that was worth a shit in a the whole package. I had almost $200 in matching drivers and it's the only one left with a good tip
