Goodies for my shelfqueen JRX2

Post by Cpt.America »

My JRX2 is ALMOST ready to be completed. I just received some of the innards that will be going in. All of them brand new in package. Looking at these things sitting here in their packages, it really seems like a shame to open them. It's almost like I need 3 of everything, 1 NIP, 1 new but opened and on the car, and 1 in a runner. I do have one question about the motor... should I actually solder the speedo wires (once i get one) to the motor? Should i tape them there? Should I just run some push on connectors? I'm never going to run this, it's going to be a total shelf queen... and I don't know if soldering to a mint motor like this is a no-no or not. Not only would it put solder on the motor, but the wires wouldn't then be mint on the ESC (When I get one) What would you do?

Here is what I have lined up:

JRX2 original body
NER-2X receiver
FP S148 servo
Matched Sanyo 1400s
Revolution 27 turn stock motor

Here is the car:

looks great. Finding all that nip electronics is quite impressive. I personally cannot bring myself to solder on an unmolested vintage motor, so I just tuck the leads under between the motor and gearbox.

I would solder them on, but I don't own any new vintage motors, so my opinion might change if I did. Hey, send me that one, and I will let you know once I have it  .

I do have a question though, if this is going to be a shelfer, why are you using a slipper assembly?

Haven't had a chance to put the original spur gear on. That is how the car came from the original owner.

Gotcha. Don't get me wrong. I have 2 runners (JRX2 and JRX-Pro) and I put a slipper on and they handle any new power plant, but was just curious on a shelfer.

That is one pretty buggy. Are you going box art?

I certainly am... Even though I am pretty good with an airbrush, I am having a pro paint it for me. The thought of screwing up the paint job on a NIP original body stresses me out just thinking about it....

Build it the way you would have built it in 1988... solder the motor wires, use the ESC fuses, receiver wire in the antenna, battery packs wired up and assembled properly, paint the body, oil in the shocks. The best shelf displays are those that are the most accurate.

Cars with clear bodies, no electronics and aluminum wheels are boring to me. I want to see the car displayed as if it just came off the track in the 80s and went right into a display case.

That's just me, though.

Thanks for your opinion... Since these electronics will probably be in the car forever, and never taken out to be sold as "mint" again, it may be cooler to solder up and wire it up like it was going to be the car's first day at the track.

Hopefully more people chime in! I don't want to screw it up :D

I am very familiar with those pictures... i have been drooling over them since the first day I signed up here... they are all over the net, by the way. I have a feeling my SQ will look a lot like that when done. As soon as I find a T-4, I will be complete. I am currently trying to find a battery jig to borrow :D

By all means (neatly) solder it in... even on a shelf they should be able to be powered up and run at any point, even if you never actually do.

I absolutely love that JRX2 Doug.... one of my all-time favourites & a great inspiration!

Cptn America - You are lucky to have all those NIP electrics.... I would (like you have already suggested) fit & solder it all in. It offers far more interest IMO as a race ready car 8)

I have the same NIP Revolution motor (courtesy of Rich) also an original NIP SWB shell - but unfortunately that appears to have had a hard life inside its bag, as its crushed in one corner & has light scuffing all over
