PLEASE VOTE: Interest in the RC10M mid motor conversion kit?

Post by mk-Zero »

I'm putting the finishing touches on having the motor plates and rear towers for this conversion manufactured and would like to try and gauge the interest in buying the parts to do this conversion in a kit form. The thread detailing the parts is here --> http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=40247

Note the kit will convert any pan-based RC10 to a mid motor layout without the need to drill any holes or cut anything. Totally reversible. It will work on both 6-gear and Stealth cars alike. The transmission is made to use the gears out of a Stealth though so if you are converting a 6-gear car you would need to source those gears. Being a 4-gear layout, the trans uses an extra idler (AE 6570) and the kits will come with one as well as the bearings to go with it. As another caveat, World's rerelease cars use a different idler gear than the original Stealth, so you would need an additional (2 total) original idler (AE 6570) if converting a World's rere car, although I could probably provide those too.

The kit will come with everything needed to do the conversion, and at risk of making things too complicated I could even offer a base kit that included only the bare minimum to do the conversion as well as a deluxe kit that had option parts included.

The basic Kit will include the trans case, idler gear, bearings for the idler gear, bulkhead, motor plate spacers, motor plate, and tower. The Deluxe kit would include the above plus the rear brace and tubes and the body/wing tube mount. For World's rere cars I could provide the additional idler gear for an additional cost.

The cost of the basic kit will be $100 + shipping
The cost of the Deluxe kit will be $130 + shipping
An additional idler gear (for people using a World's rere) will be $6

Please vote above to help me gauge the demand for these parts and what the mix would be between basic and deluxe kits, extra idlers, etc, or if people just want to source everything on their own.

Here are the components:

Just to clarify ...

Base kit is all your custom pieces and Deluxe includes base plus extra "commercial" parts (idlers, bearings) needed for tranny?

Sorry if my post was confusing. Here's what the two kits would include:

Base Kit:
Trans case
idler gear and bearings
bulkhead
Tower
Motor Plate
Motor Plate spacers

Deluxe Kit:
Trans case
idler gear and bearings
bulkhead
Tower
Motor Plate
Motor Plate spacers
Rear Chassis brace
Rear Chassis Brace tubes
Body and Wing tube mount

The Base Kit will include everything you need to convert a stealth car to an RC10M. (People using a 6-gear car as the donor car will need the stealth diff, outdrives, one idler, input shaft, slipper, and bearings.) But the builder will be "on their own" as far as mounting the body and wing, and the rear motor guard of the chassis will be unprotected. They could use B5M wing mounts like I did, and maybe velcro the body on the sides of the pan. Note for running B5M wing mounts you have to cut a large hole in the body for the wing mounts to protrude through. Also, without reinforcing the motor guard at the back of the chassis you run the risk of tweaking it in a crash. The YouTube video is essentially showing the Base kit (B5M wing mounts not included in the kit, though). I made that video prior to designing and prototyping the additional parts that are included in the Deluxe kit.

The Deluxe kit has all of the above but the addition of the body and wing tube mount, rear chassis brace mount, and rear chassis brace tubes. With this kit all the details are ironed out as far as mounting the body, wing, and reinforcing the back of the pan. The wing tubes and rear body mounting post are in the stock locations, which allows you to take a body previously fitted to a regular RC10 and drop it right on the RC10M conversion. The rear brace setup reinforces the back of the chassis to keep it from getting mangled in a crash and gives the car a "finished" look, with the rear tubes mirroring the front tubes in form and function.

I hope that helps 8)

Deluxe kit it has to be .as if has the rear tubes otherwise I would only have to make them myself. It's going to get raced and without like you say the rear could get tweaked if hit hard

Will Do!
The first run of parts is going to be enough for 20 kits. What ever's left over after you guys and a couple local guys get kits will probably go on eBay.

Shapeways parts and towers

I also got in 16 idler gears from AE. Still need motor plates and bearings. I also need to buy aluminun tubing and start making the rear chassis brace tubes.

10 sets of Shapeways parts. I also have 20 towers and 20 motor plates and plenty of idlers and bearings. I also made 10 set of rear chassis brace tubes. Will be ready to start taking orders soon 8)
