Cross Fire Force CF-01

Post by EvolutionRevolution »

This will become a build thread for the Cross Fire Force CF-01 F-1 chassis. However, before I actually start building this car, I will need to complete my Kyosho Impress, because I want to have the ancestor finished before I tackle the descendant (for comparison purposes)

In case the preceding is incomprehensible: Cross did development work for Kyosho on the Impress and might also have produced the kits for them. The Fire Force is basically a very evolved Impress, released a few years after the Impress stopped being available.

Box & open box:

Optional parts found in part lots:

Recently bought optional parts:

I still need to buy a few optional parts such as turnbuckles and the like.

So I've decided this thread (and the Kyosho Impress thread elsewhere) shall receive some new posts soonish.

(yes, I am alive, and living in a better place free of crazy upstairs neighbours now).

You see, somewhere in the last four years I also got my paws on the last Fire Force version released, the CF-108. This is basically a F-103'ed Fire Force that ditches most of the interesting aspects of the original, but does however include stuff like a carbon chassis and alloy motor mount (and a body) right in the box. Picturz shall be provided.

The Cross Fire Force CF-108 was released in, IIRC, 2008, and came in two variants: a LMP version and a F1 version. The only difference was the body provided and the wings (for the F1) or bumper (for the LMP). This is the F1 version. It was produced in conjunction with another manufacturer called Option no. 1.

Box:

Original price 21,800 yen excluding taxes (about 200 bucks). I found it for 5,000 yen at a second-hand online store

The box contains the following:

A manual that consists of a bunch of photocopied A4 sheets stapled together, all in Japanese:

A clear F1 body of uncertain make, probably produced by Cross:

Now I dislike Cross' bodies for one particular reason: they're not made of lexan/polycarbonate and tend to shatter on impact. So I don't have too high hopes for this getting used for anything else than display...

A driver helmet, misc. parts baggy, antenna tube, rear wing, and four tires with inserts:

...and the car itself, which comes almost fully assembled:

Unfortunately they forgot to degrease the wheels before painting them  , so the paint flakes off...

It has a few advantages over the previous version, namely coming with a carbon chassis and top deck, alloy pod parts, fibre reinforced plastic parts, alloy shock, and adjustable camber at the front:

Unfortunately, it also has a bunch of regressions compared to the previous version:
- no rear link suspension, but a t-bar without tweak screws.
- the servo needs to be taped to the chassis, which means high-torque models and mini servos are not an option.
- no more cool cantilevered front suspension design (of course the new suspension is lighter...).
