My cougar 2 project.

So I like many others fell for the nostalgia trap. The "oh I used to have a Cougar 2 works, I fancy another".

One came up for sale locally at a price I couldn't resist and came with a load of spares, normally all good signs so I went to buy it.

First thing I noticed although not much could be seen on a dark doorstep in winter was the wrong shocks, so I pointed this out and got a small discount..........I should have pushed harder!

This is what I got.

Now in fairness to the seller I don't recall him claiming it was a works, although the works chassis is obvious, but he did say it was a cougar 2. Well let me tell you the only bits of C2 in there are that chassis and a rear bulkhead that wasn't fitted. Every other part is early cougar or topcat. Some club 10 bits just for good measure.

What I didn't like at all was the claim that it was a runner, came with 2 speedos and motors and some batteries, now the batteries are junk everyone uses lipos these days, but the speedos and motors may have been of use, trouble is both speedos have been misconnected and both smell burnt out now, worse than that there is no way he ran the car, the rear wishbones had been attached using the servo linkages???? and because he used the wrong rear arms there was about 10mm front to back movement of the wheel where the slop in the joint allowed the wishbone to flop around, that must have made for some interesting handling!!

But it isn't all bad, in among all this I discovered my original car wasn't a works at all but was a topcat converted in to a cougar with a few hop ups, a real race car from back in the day. So the early car is probably more like my original, that said it looks like I will end up with a complete or near complete early cougar from the bits left over from my works build but I will have to sell it, not even I can justify keeping 2!

With the help of ebay and some good lads on oople (heres to you Mark if your on here) Ive managed to get hold of most of the bits I need to finish it, I also had a lucky find in a local model shop and fibrelyte helped with a new front tower. All I'm hunting now is a slipper assembly or even just the layshaft (this is my biggest holdup as I can't finish the gearbox till I have it.) front and rear wishbones and ideally some ballraced steering.

At least my RC10s are easy to get bits for!

Looks like a fun project! It can be a gamble with auctions like this but as long as you didn't pay over the odds then it look like you did alright.

Keep us posted on the restoration,

I'm afraid not, just to rub it in its in really good condition too, a bit too good to use really.

As a fellow cougar fan don't suppose you have a spare layshaft do you?

Nope, and just to rub it in they don't come up often either unless on complete cars  I'm sure someone here or oople will have one, or maybe someone has had them made?

I've always liked that purple-pan Schumacher...someday, I hope to acquire one, I think it would look great on the shelf beside my Barney Kyosho Optima. 8)

Looking forward to your resto!

please Don't.

please keep the sales requests and parts requests for the b/s/t area when approved. Not allowed in the open forums.

Thanx

Todd

p.s. really nice lookin start of a great schumacher though. Gotta love it when someone doesn't really know what they are doing when they work on these and give them up after not beating them to death
