Sort of? I think it's the fibers in the material reflecting light. If I pick it up and turn it, some angles it's shiny, others its the same darkness as, say, the drive belt.

Unfortunately it's a sensorless outrunner, but it seems to work well. Any time the wheels spin the motor can spins for something different, plus it sounds different too.
