MIP Jrx2 Transmission #LB-2000

Post by matt1ptkn »

I couldn't decide if I wanted to start a new thread for this, or add to an existing one. Somehow I just ended up putting it here.

I've always wanted to check out one of these MIP transmissions, so with a little luck, I picked this one up at our local RC swap meet a few weeks ago. Its in great shape, and is soooo smooth. Its complete and all original and appears to have had very light use. I'm planning to clean it up, but after that I am undecided. I have many runners that would benefit from it, but its practically too cool to use. It came with the MIP dual disk slipper, and I also had been able to pick up another NIP MIP L-100 slipper kit recently. The MIP SP-1 outdrives were another swap meet find, and I think I have an upcoming build to use them on. 8) Thoughts and suggestions are always welcome, because I suffer horribly from indecisiveness.

My suggestion is: Please sell it to me

This is lovely... I would build a whole car around this with all kinds of fluo yellow bits... if you sold it to me

Nice looking transmission. Let me know if you plan to sell the sp-1 outdrives as I'd have a use for them

Question about the timeline of this transmission: when was it available with respect to the Hydradrive? Would a Hydradrive have ever been used on this transmission, or is the MIP slipper simply superior/preferred?

Gears are turning...

I think the hydra dates back to 1992-93... that eminently desirable MIP transmission is anterior to that.

right, the MIP would not really have run the hydra-drive. If the top shaft would fit it, you certainly could run it on it.

Thanks for the info! I recently got an RC lot off eBay that included a new hydra, so that's why I was asking. I thought it could be cool to mate them, but I wasn't sure if it would have been a practical set up. I guess if I have to ask, then it probably isn't "cool".

Finally got around to some partial disassembly of the transmission. I'm really surprised about the condition of this thing. Other than some scratches on the outdrives and light wear on the top shaft gear's teeth, its very "newish". I still can't get over how smooth and free the diff is while not allowing any slippage. It currently has the wrong length aluminum socket head cap screws holding it together, as can be seen above, by the amount of threads sticking out of the motor plate. Its also missing 2 of the screws that secure the motor plate to the case. I'm assuming that these are supposed to be a button head screw, maybe a #2-56? Which leads me to some questions:
1. Is the MIP logo on the side of the case supposed to be black, or was that colored in by a previous owner?
2. What's the difference between the LB-1000 and the LB-2000 transmissions?
3. Does anyone have a copy of the instructions that they'd be willing to share?
Thanks for any info!

You will find some info and pictures of the LB-1000 transmission: https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=416&p=214339&hilit=hopped+up+jrx#p214339
I also have a restored LB-2000 box on this car: https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=35886
These are most definitely the smoothest transmissions I ever had in my hands. The quality is outstanding, even the used LB-2000 is still silky smooth.
Your tranny is definitely a LB-2000!
The LB-1000 (aka Pro-Box, priced at $125 BITD) has dogbone drives and a nylon counter-gear where the LB-2000 (aka Champ-Box, priced at $100) is fitting stock slider drives. Both units have sealed bearings, polished thrust plates, molded and machined gears, slipper clutches and super carbide diff balls. They were both released in late '91.
The MIP logo is not painted from factory so that was done by the previous owner.
I can scan the instructions of the LB-1000 and post them here later.

Thanks for the info.! I've reviewed both of your threads previously, but the images don't show up for me; the thread just says "image" where a photo should be. I think the firewall here at work blocks photos with unknown sources. I'll have to check it out from home. Another question: what lube is/can be used on the diff. assembly of this transmission? If you could, I would be very grateful for a scan of your instructions!

You should be able to fix the problem by downloading one of these patches depending on the browser you use: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/hyperscale/free-photobucket-fix-that-works-for-old-posts-in-f-t242634.html?hotlinkfix=1525262720180
I'll make a scan of the instructions ASAP and post it here and in the scan section.
You can use Stealth diff lube for the diff balls and Associated black grease for the thrust assembly. Do not lube the gears or just a fly fart.

Thanks David for enlighting us once more :)

Any period user can comment on using a normal ballrace as a thrust bearing? Lots of axial forces at play, here!
